Name

I've changed it to Adana station, in the absence of any evidence it is call Adana Central. Wheeltapper (talk) 19:10, 15 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

And again. Is there any proof at all it is called "Central"? Why would a Turkish station have a name apparently in English? The Turkish-language Wikipedia page just calls it Adana station. Wheeltapper (talk) 12:59, 21 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The Turkish is Adana gar, however Gar may also refer to a Bus terminal. Adana has several stations so Central simply differs this one from the others. In Turkish people also refer to the station as "ana gar" (Central station) (Central Data Bank (talk))

Adana railway station → Adana station – In Turkish "railway station" is rarely used. The common reference to a train station is just "<city/town> station", therefore Adana railway station should be moved to Adana station. Central Data Bank (talk) 17:23, 26 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Turkish station names

@User:Amakuru, I created most railway station articles in Turkey with the name XXX railway station before I realized the correct naming convention for Turkish stations. I also must stress that Turkey is not the UK or Poland. Like I said before in Turkish the name of a railway station is XXX station. ). My point is that such a large scale move of hundreds of articles is generally likely to be controversial and you should have discussed it before carrying them out.

As for the actual issue, I'm not entirely sure what you mean by the "correct naming convention for Turkish stations". Presumably most of them are actually named in the Turkish language rather than English, which means there is no default name for them. Also, whether we say "railway station" or "station" is to some extent down to Wikipedia conventions. In the UK and Poland we've decided to go with XXX railway station as the convention, and it seems logical to me that Turkey should also follow the same convention for WP:CONSISTENCY. You may have good reasons why that is not the case though.

I suggest the best course of action would be to start a multi-move request for a few of the titles to set a precedent (not all, as there are hundreds of them), explain exactly why the convention should be changed, with evidence, and let other Wikipedians discuss the matter. I will start a multi-move discussion as you suggested and explain my reasoning there. I would also like to start a naming convention for Turkish stations to explain the name changes to anyone who asks in the future. Since you are an admin, I would like to ask you whether or not I have the authority to start a naming convention. As someone who has personally lived in Turkey for 4 years, I have rarely heard the use of 'railway station' in daily language as well as official documents. That is the main reason for the move. Also, I wouldn't have moved it if every train station article on WP was XXX railway station; but since US and Japan articles use this format, I changed the Turkish articles to better match their real-life names. – The common name for all railway stations in Turkey is XXX station. This can be seen in official State Railway documents, books, magazines and even in daily conversation. The only time that XXX railway station is used is to differentiate between a nearby bus station with the same name. These cases are not common place as bus stations are referred to as Otogar in Turkish (directly translated as Autostation) In books published by government agencies or publishers with great recognition, such as the İzmir Metropolitan Municipality Cultural Publications or the Atatürk Research Center, the naming format of XXX station can be seen. Therefore I conclude that the proper naming convention for Turkish railway stations is XXX station (Adana station, Alsancak station, Haydarpaşa station) Central Data Bank (talk) 17:56, 2 November 2017 (UTC) Relisted. Oppose: I think there's a point that you're missing which is more related to the language than the sources. Most of the railway jargon in turkish comes from french (like many other words in daily vocabulary aswell). So when you say gar in turkish, which comes from the french word gare, this already means a place where trains stop, that's why people usually don't say tren garı. You can also check on
WP:Precision). Because as Intercity bus stations are very common in Turkey, I'm affraid that XXX station naming will create some confusions, at least for most of Turkish people. But then there will also be the issue on how to name small stops with single platforms like Marşandiz in Ankara or Kazlıçeşme in Istanbul. Because gar is more used for big stations like Haydarpaşa or Ankara, with at least two platforms and many tracks (not an official categorization, my personal observation, can be disscussed). In english (to what I understood) you can call them both station/railway station. But in turkish someone is unlikely to say Kazlıçeşme garı, he/she would rather say Kazlıçeşme istasyonu (for example). Best. Nezo90 (talk) 22:59, 2 November 2017 (UTC)[reply

Oppose: As one can see in Station the word station is not confined to trains. In the book of TCDD of course the emphasis on trains.
