Does the person who wrote this article know that Ah Meng did not attack the research student due to 'jealousy', and if so, how? Indeed, 'anthropomorphism', or 'attributing human emotions to non-human animals', is not always supported by scientific evidence. However, it is becoming increasingly accepted that non-human animals, and particularly primates, are able to feel and express a wide range of emotions. I do not believe that the writer can claim to know that Ah Meng did not feel jealous, just as one would be unable to claim to know that she did. Thus, this comment is simply an opinion and not a fact. I think it should be removed or rephrased, or at the very least supported with scientific evidence. --218.186.18.236 (talk) 16:32, 13 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I understand she was the bartender on a drilling rig barge called Ismaya for some years before she came to the zoo, a new company that had bought the rig insisted she find a new home hence the zoo. The captain had found her, young and orphaned, for sale in a harbourside market looking miserable. A crewman who was a cabinetmaker built a teak bar which she instantly claimed. Anyone who tried to sit on her stool was immediately launched across the room onto a sofa. She learned to mix cocktails and apparently had a great time, she'd go out on the town with the crew when they were in port and was so well known by locals that taxi drivers would know where to take her when she wanted to go home. That period of her life is what made her so at ease around people and was the reason she was such a good ambassador for the zoo.
