Canovas was arguably the most important politician of Spain in the late nineteenth century. I have therefore rewritten and expanded this entry which was really just a stub/translation from the Spanish entry (which is itself astonishingly cursory and largely a copyvio). Much more attention should be paid to the post 1885 policies of Canovas, particularly since they led quite directly to the Spanish American War, Cuban independence, etc etc.... Are you sure you want to say this?
