Norse name
According to Strang (1975) p165 the Norse word is spelled 'A-ssynt with an apostrophe at the beginning. My Old Norse is a trifle rusty and I am simply repeating it here. I mention this as on the edit page it looks like a possible typo beginning as it does with three apostrophes, thus: '' 'A-ssynt''. Ben MacDui (Talk) 10:32, 19 November 2006 (UTC)
- I suspect that's a lexicographical convention to illustrate stress and syllable division, or something along those lines, and wouldn't appear in an Old Norse text or, probably, an encyclopedia article. That's just guesswork, and I don't know where Strang got his information from, but I've had a quick perusal of Old Norse and can't find any similar marks. --Blisco 12:31, 19 November 2006 (UTC)
- There is a lengthy bibliography but no obvious candidate for a source save J.B. Johnston's 1972 Place Names of Scotland, which I lack a copy of. It may of course be an SMC typo... Ben MacDui (Talk) 13:37, 19 November 2006 (UTC)
Pronunciation
How is the name of this place pronounced? Jan1naD (talk • contrib) 13:32, 7 December 2009 (UTC)
I am not much good with the phonetic hieroglyphics, but something like "a-sint" if you are native GB English sprecher. Ben MacDui 19:00, 7 December 2009 (UTC)
- Thanks for that, it's just that for some reason I had "A sign-t" lurking in my head. Now I know. Jan1naD (talk • contrib) 09:32, 8 December 2009 (UTC)
Legacy of Asainte
Are there any places named after Asainte? A "New Asainte" for example? If so could we add these to the article?
