The article says:

An early Mesozoic origin has been suggested for basket stars....

which would place their origin somewhere around 250 million years ago, or less. However, the article goes on to say:

In spite of this, the fossil record of this group is rather poor and only dates back to Carboniferous .

which now pushes their origin back to 300 million years or longer. This is inconsistent with the intent of the initial remark.

Perhaps the first quote should read:

"An early Paleozoic origin has been suggested for basket stars..."

I don't know one way or the other (otherwise, I would fix the error), but the article as it is now is contradictory.

Looking at the article's history, an earlier version said Miocene rather than Carboniferous, which would at least be consistent - still doesn't tell us if it's correct though. HairyDan (talk) 20:25, 4 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Here's a source for anyone with the time to rewrite this article: http://www.palaeos.com/Invertebrates/Echinoderms/Ophiuroidea/Ophiuroidea.htm HairyDan (talk) 20:50, 4 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
