Planned support for DEFLATE algorithm and gzip format in the next POSIX revision.

Hi all, I once submitted a comment to Austin Group issue tracker requesting better compression and checksum algorithm to be recommended in new systems. They've responded by adding support for gzip format to compress utility (see http://austingroupbugs.net/view.php?id=1041) which would be relevant to this page.

I suppose it might be too early to add that info here, but nonetheless relevant so I'm adding anyway. I expect this be discussed when needed. Dannyniu (talk) 08:53, 23 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I read that the use of DEFLATE in compress is by use of the -s option, and the format is mostly the same as gzip except the header (which omits some stuff that gzip includes), and is called Quasijarus, and still has a .Z filename extension. However, as far as I know it is currently implemented only on VAX. --Zzo38 (talk) 18:35, 8 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
