What is "A-200" that was referred to as being available?

The pool and sauna area located in the basement of the Ansonia was also at one time a gay bathhouse called the "Ansonia 73", some time during the 1970s, I think. I know for sure it was there, just not sure about the dates. Much later, that space was also converted into a temporary retail space for Tower Records in 1994/1995 while they were renovating their space on 66th Street and Broadway (they just covered over the pool, I guess. Or not.) Another interesting purported factoid I remember hearing was a claim that Johnny Weissmuller once practiced in it's Olympic sized pool, although I can't find any verification at all for that. I can't find anything online about the Ansonia 73 except a mention that there was a commercial for it in a 1974 movie entitled Midnight Blue Collection, Volume 3. I guess a way to validate it is to find an ad for the place in the Village Voice, another local paper, or in a gay publication/guide of the period. Maybe the Continental Baths was just renamed/re-themed for a while as an attempt to gain back customers? Does anyone remember the place, or have any further information? Hi, I don't even know how this works so forgive me if my formatting is wrong but I have been researching the subject of NYC gay history and noticed that the last ad I could find for Ansonia '73 baths in "Michael's Thing" (weekly publication) was from 1982. The NYPL has a box of "MIchael's Thing" but it's not complete or in order so I wouldn't assume the issue I found was a definite closing mark but there was nothing in the 1983 issues I found. I wanted to perpetuate here that in 1973, in New York for an academic meeting (Modern Language Association), stayed there overnight (you could do this in gay bathhouses, if you paid for the time, though not many did), asked for a receipt, turned it in to the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, and got reimbursed. Also turned in the address (not the name) for the "Who's Where" service at the meeting. Hell, UNC'd already fired me, what else could they do? deisenbe (talk) 13:52, 25 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
