Lack of release in the United States

I remember reading back in 1996 that this film was not shown almost anywhere in the United States because Ted Turner indirectly controlled pretty much all American movie houses and was personally opposed to the film because, in his words, "What if kids see this thing and copy it?" Symphorophilia & Sexuoerotic tragedy

The article for Symphorophilia mentions this movie, but this movie's article does not mention Symphorophilia. Symphorophilia is a paraphilia in which sexuoerotism hinges on staging and watching a disaster such as a fire or traffic accidents. This movie's Symphorophilia seems to be brought about by sexuoerotic tragedy, which is a sexological term denoting an intense, memorable and influential event which is instrumental in altering a person's perception of what is and is not sexually arousing. Symphorophilia is not a very mainstream concept, indeed the origin of the word can be traced to John Money circa 1984. The book Crash came out around 1973 and didn't mention the concept per se, instead focusing on car-related sexuality. It's pretty broad and I don't actually agree that the term is 100% applicable here. In Crash, the thrill is in being in a car crash, not watching it, and the aftermath of a single-car accident (Ballard's) is as thrilling as one involving multiple cars. The actual forensic psychology of what they are doing is barely touched upon with nothing very in-depth said on the subject. They certainly didn't get any "couch time" in the movie.
Lots of time is spent talking about cars in general and their relation to sexuality. Deborah Kara Unger has sex on a car in the first scene; Rosanna Arquette becomes highly aroused being helped into a luxury sedan and tearing the seat with her leg brace, etc. A sexuoerotic tragedy is not necessarily a negative thing, per se, but it isn't explored much in the movie either. They do get off on watching the car crashes on the videotapes on TV (they get that sort of "couch time"!) and certainly Vaughn's elaborate staging of the famous accidents could fall under the category mentioned above. It's an interesting point to make, but since neither Ballard nor Cronenberg uses the term, any mention of it should be done carefully so as not to be

The phrasing in the lead is odd, "a notable form of paraphilia," odd as the Symphorophilia article isn't linked to and is bordering on not being notable itself. Is the type of sexuality displayed in the film even a defined paraphilia? Either way it seems to need a source. (Emperor (talk) 03:19, 26 May 2012 (UTC))[reply]

Movie poster

I have a copy of another version of the movie poster, the one that was used after Crash won at Cannes, but don't know how to upload it. It's basically the same image as this one, but not blue, and has the Cannes info on it. If someone will tell me how to put it on the page, I'll do so. (Never done an image before).
