Name

Lopifalko, please explain your side of the story about Don Diablo's last name being Diablo and not Schipper. The man himself has said his real name is Don Schipper, Diablo is a nickname.[1] - TheMagnificentist (talk) 16:00, 23 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Ss112. I would like you to have a say on this about using "Diablo" to refer in the content of this article. I think the article's main content should use "Schipper" which is his real last name not his stage name (nickname). The article intermixed Diable and Schipper. I standardised that to always use Schipper. Having read Wikipedia:Naming conventions (people) I changed that to Diablo. I looked but found no policy regarding how the pseudonym was supposed to be used (Don Diablo or Diablo). I've seen articles use both. It depends, and I have conflicting views over it myself. For instance,
Madonna's surname is Ciccone, but 99% of the time she is referred to as her mononym, and so if the article were to use "Ciccone" over and over, people may be confused (but perhaps that's not particularly comparable because Don Diablo is not known by one name). I understand shortening "Don Diablo" to Diablo, because using "Don Diablo" over and over is a bit wordier (and it's clear who's being talked about, which is the main thing), and Schipper is his real surname, so I understand that too. I don't mind either way, so long as any one article is consistent with what it chooses to use. Ss112 16:18, 23 November 2016 (UTC)[reply

Two articles linked to on
WP:NCM use differing standards. It's hard to say. 50 Cent uses "Jackson" as that's his real surname (and I daresay he isn't better known as Curtis Jackson), and Lady Gaga shortens uses of her name to just "Gaga" and not "Germanotta", her real surname. Ss112 16:25, 23 November 2016 (UTC)[reply

WP:SURNAME says "After the initial mention of any name, the person should generally be referred to by surname only". So by Wikipedia policies, Schipper should be used. But it also says that "People who are best known by a pseudonym should be subsequently referred to by their pseudonymous surnames, unless they do not include a recognizable surname in the pseudonym, in which case the whole pseudonym is used". - TheMagnificentist (talk) 16:34, 23 November 2016 (UTC)[reply

That would seem to support "Diablo" then, as it is a recognisable pseudonymous surname as it follows Western name order, a first and surname. Ss112 17:05, 23 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
