Artistic licence?

In reality, both observers would have had their sextants to their eyes - Maybe. Maybe one of them is having trouble with his. "where has my vernier scale gone?" he might be saying. or "Oh crap, I've dropped the captain's sextant, I hope it's not broken". --Robert EA Harvey (talk) 11:15, 27 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Eight Bells
Eight Bells is an 1886 oil painting by the American artist Winslow Homer which depicts two sailors determining their boat's position. Though Eight Bells only sold for $400, it was praised by critics at its first exhibition in 1888. The painting is now held by the Addison Gallery of American Art.Painting: Winslow Homer

Possible copyvio

This page http://www.winslowhomer.org/eight-bells.jsp has very similar text, does not acknowledge Wikipedia and says it is copyright all rights reserved. Looks like they copied it? Billlion (talk) 21:12, 8 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Details of noon sight

Following a discussion on NavList http://fer3.com/arc/m2.aspx/Wikipedia-article-Winslow-Homers-Eight-Bells-FrankReed-apr-2019-g44746 initiated by Frank Reed, I edited out the claim for artistic license and the incorrect description of rocking. As well as being speculative it constitutes

WP:NOR original research. A also removed the claim that dawn and dusk sights were more common (at that time) as it is not supported by the references (and the discussion on NavList suggest it is not true). I think it would be great if there was an analysis of the painting from the point of view of celestial navigation, but that needs to be published somewhere it can be peer reviewed before we can use it here. It is a shame the Winslowhomer.org blindly copied it without attribution!Billlion (talk) 07:36, 10 April 2019 (UTC)[reply
