Useful reading

This article does not yet show any sources. I have found somewhere to start:

  • Educational Documents, England and Wales 1816 to the present day, J Stuart MacLure, 1965, 1979, 370.942
  • Education in Britain 1750-1914, W B Stephens, 1998,

The article needs a good looking at. For example, I have not discovered a source which states that education was limited to boys. I will change that. If the quoted David Thomson is to remain then the article needs to say who he is, or link to him. Oosoom 17:59, 30 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Removed [As David Thomson pointed out “there was little progress towards a system of public education before 1867. There were plenty of schools, but no general system”.]

Removed [However, as Thomson points out “[t]he spread of elementary education made them [less well paid labourers] more discontented with their lot” – i.e. if the workers were more skilled then they should surely be paid more.]

until source found. Oosoom 18:40, 5 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I think it more that boys (as in other places and other times) were given preferential treatment in education - and, initially, the external school exams were limited to boys, with girls being entered first unofficially and then formally. Jackiespeel (talk) 16:22, 1 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Redirection

Should a search for Forster Education Act not direct to this page? This name for the act is mentioned in the article as 'common', so it's likely (as I did) that people will search using this name.86.155.23.223 13:45, 24 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Standard VII

This was established at a later stage than the initial six - and a system was devised whereby one school in each area would teach this (or the upper levels in general). What were this grade's features?

School Boards

'Noting for the record' - details can be found using The National Archives (United Kingdom) Discovery catalogue: creating the equivalent of https://london.fandom.com/wiki/School_Boards_in_Outer_London would probably be too OR for Wikipedia. Jackiespeel (talk) 17:50, 28 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
