Have you checked the references? The IUCN certainly appears to believe in the species, and the National Geographic backs up the claim of there being no extant females. What made you believe this is a spoof entry, anyway? GeeJo ^(t)⁄_(c) • 15:11, 20 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

This is a real plant - only males exist because there were only 4 male stems all growing alongside each other, presumably from one original plant - the females are extinct, along with all other males. These cycads do not require females to exist, as they can reproduce vegetatively. The

There is no mention of the possibility that one of the 600 or so clones could change their sex, therefore enabling sexual reproduction. It is known to happen to cycads among other plants. I didn't find any official argumentation for the loss of that specimen than the article on FB that doesn't cite any source... Just a rumour.
