Ferris Wheel at Columbian Exhibition

Axle weight

The axle can't be both 89,320 pounds and 71 tons (142,000#). Which is it? The language in this is over written. One thing does not comprise something, take out that clause and simplify it all.—Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.34.189.218 (talkcontribs)

The axle comprised three parts - central tube (89,320 pounds) plus two spiders (53,031 pounds for the pair). See Talk:Ferris wheel/Archive 2#Ferris Wheel at Columbian Exhibition. 92.4.41.73 (talk) 05:29, 13 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Merge with Ferris Wheel?

It seems like this article might be better suited to be within the overall ferris wheel article ~~ —Preceding unsigned comment added by 143.235.113.122 (talk) 19:26, 16 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Disagree, clearly notable in its own right. 182.52.79.167 (talk) 18:54, 11 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Steam Driven

I see no mention of the Wheel's being steam driven, a fact surprising enough to be in the main article itself I do believe. Abenr (talk) 20:40, 19 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

It's mentioned in the fourth paragraph under "Design and construction". Station1 (talk) 22:43, 22 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I wish it gave more details. The ones it does give seem dubious to me..."1,000 horsepower engines"? Even ONE "1,000hp" engine would seem to be far more than it would need. Steam engine are usually low-horsepower, high torque. A couple hundred horsepower ought to be plenty to spin a balanced wheel on an axle. It's not like it has to spin it very fast. Steam locomotives were capable of some pretty high horsepower outputs, but only because they had to be able to stroke very rapidly to allow for high rates of speed..45Colt 03:54, 12 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Ferris WheelFerris Wheel (1893) – To avoid confusion with Ferris wheel (Ferris wheels in general, whereas Ferris Wheel was the original one. In my opinion, WP should avoid articles with the same names but only different capitalizations. Facts707 (talk) 13:16, 22 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Biggest?

My copy of the Guiness Book of World Records (from the late 1970's) said that this original Ferris Wheel was the largest that had ever been built. That is evidently not true anymore, but it bears mentioning in this article if that fact can be verified. Shocking Blue (talk) 11:03, 26 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Stereoscopic card in backwards

The stereoscopic card is displayed properly for reading the printing on the card. However, it is in backwards for viewing. You can view these cards unassisted by focusing on your finger held about 2" from you eyes. Then slowly move your finger toward the picture keeping it in focus and seeing the picture in the background. At some point your eyes will automatically pull the two images together as one, at which point you can remove your finger and enjoy the 3D image. — Preceding unsigned comment added by WithGLEE (talkcontribs) 23:41, 15 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I pulled the image into a photo editor and reversed it. This didn't remove the problem I described. I was unable to delete my comment so I offer this apology. WithGLEE (talk) 23:51, 15 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Requested move 26 April 2021

The following is a closed discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. Editors desiring to contest the closing decision should consider a move review after discussing it on the closer's talk page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.

The result of the move request was: There is a clear consensus to move, but no consensus on whether Ferris Wheel should point to ferris wheel or a dab page. I will temporarily point it to the dab page to resolve incoming links; the optimal target can be discussed at RfD. (t · c) buidhe 05:20, 3 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Ferris WheelFerris Wheel (1893) – or Ferris Wheel (Chicago World's Fair) or Ferris Wheel at World's Columbian Exhibition. The capital letter seems inadequate to clearly distinguish this Ferris wheel from all the others. The same suggestion failed ten years ago, but maybe consensus has changed since then (and one of the opponents has been indef blocked for sockpuppetry). Disambiguation by capitalization is sometimes OK, but here it seems to fail to clearly identify the subject. This is not to distinguish the title of a book or film from other topics; here the 'W' is attempting to identify one wheel among many. — BarrelProof (talk) 02:40, 26 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

  • Oppose for the same reasons as last time. The W, in conjunction with the hatnote and the first paragraph, is more than adequate to distinguish the title of the article about the original from its generic namesakes. There is no evidence that this has been causing any problems, so turning "Ferris Wheel" into a dab page would simply inconvenience anyone looking for this article, by adding an unnecessary extra step. Station1 (talk) 08:40, 26 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support as to mainly just differentiate the title of the generic concept as well as potentially other ferris wheels out their with the same name from this particular wheel.
  • Support A glance at the references shows that the capital W isn't universally used when referring to this particular wheel. Too ambiguous. 162 etc. (talk) 16:39, 26 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
    As
WP:NATURAL disambiguation, it's not necessary for the W to be always capitalized, only sometimes. And the refs show it capitalized far more often than not. In fact, Ferris Wheels: An Illustrated History makes exactly the same distinction that we are making here. Station1 (talk) 20:31, 26 April 2021 (UTC)[reply

  • Support and move
WP:DIFFCAPS, no clear primary topic for the capitalized version so its safest to disambiguate especially since there are several other proper nouns. The generic topic gets 15,239 views compared to only 2,453 for this one[[1]]. Crouch, Swale (talk) 17:49, 26 April 2021 (UTC)[reply

  • Support (strongly) per nom. Maybe Redirect "Ferris Wheel" to
    WP:SMALLDETAILS to differentiate. Paintspot Infez (talk) 20:34, 26 April 2021 (UTC)[reply
    ]
  • Support but "Ferris Wheel" should redirect to the generic article at Ferris wheel per Wikipedia:Redirect. Rreagan007 (talk) 23:37, 26 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
It probably shouldn't redirect there but to the DAB per
WP:DIFFCAPS especially given this wheel appears to be the origin of the term, its safest to disambiguate the upper case version. Crouch, Swale (talk) 07:17, 27 April 2021 (UTC)[reply
    ]
  • Support per nom. Redirect Ferris Wheel to Ferris wheel. A capped letter is not enough of a distinction for a separate title; hardly ever. Dicklyon (talk) 05:06, 28 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support – Even if you present a convincing case that "Ferris Wheel" should direct here rather than there, there's no harm in disambiguating the title, especially considering that there are other less famous Ferris wheels simply named Ferris Wheel. I prefer the 1893 DAB option as far as that goes. As for the argument that the hatnote is "more than adequate", apparently not considering this is the second attempt to address the concern. --GoneIn60 (talk) 14:23, 28 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support. The generic term is very often capitalised and is the clear primary topic. Ferris Wheel should redirect to Ferris wheel. -- Necrothesp (talk) 12:05, 29 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Observation: I find it interesting to observe how strongly the consensus changed in the 10 years since that move was originally proposed. — BarrelProof (talk) 22:10, 3 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Images of the wheel in St Louis

These images appear to be public domain and could be migrated to the article, also the article itself has some interesting information about the axle which still exists: https://orangebeanindiana.com/2021/09/26/the-very-first-ferris-wheel-still-exists/ Victor Grigas (talk) 13:03, 27 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
