Okay. So far, we've clarified the origins of D&C in today's military, and cleaned up some of the finer points. There is STILL a long way to go, and a lot of work to be done on this article. So, what I'm going to do is try to obtain a copy of the Army FM on Drill and Ceremonies. With that in mind, we may want to consider re-naming this article "Drill and Ceremonies", as that is the proper name for all of the included activities, from "Present Arms" to "Right Flank, MARCH". Another thought here. I'd like for this article to touch upon drill in history, possibly going back to antiquity, in times of the Roman Empire, maybe even farther back. If anyone has good solid source material for this, PLEASE contribute an edit! Edit Centric 06:19, 11 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
After a week's worth of research and consideration, I have added a section on Vegetius's
De Re Militari, as being applicable to this article. I'd like to go back even farther, as I'm sure there are references to drill in even the Bible. Again, anyone else can feel free to add to the scope of this article and historical drill. Edit Centric 07:00, 19 August 2006 (UTC)[reply

Geographic Neutrality

Alright, I will be the first person to acknowledge that this article may not conform to the NPOV policy, based on the fact that I don't have a lot of insight on Drill in other countries besides the US. I have even placed the POV-check box on the page to try and generate some interest and edits from users in other countries that are familiar with those nations' drill techniques and procedures. With the addition of ancient Roman drill to the article, I have removed the POVcheck banner. I'm NOT saying that this article could not use some other sections on drill from other points around the globe, however this addition DOES expand the scope of the overall article outside of the US of A. If anyone disagrees, either feel free to replace the POVcheck banner on the page, or let me know on this talk page, and I will replace it. (I'm always open-minded, and willing to entertain other points of view!)

Also, I am looking into tieing this article into the Wiki section on Warfare, needing to add a section on Training and Doctrine. Edit Centric 04:02, 21 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Problems with the article

Hiya, found this article whilst browsing and I have a ocuple of problems with it:

  • Categories are nonsense. "4th century books" "Military of ancient Rome" and "Latin prose texts"????? Seems like this should be in a generic war category, or war training or something similar!
  • There is undue prominence of the US army foot drill, which does not belong here - every army will have a foot drill and the US content is far too specific for an overview of the history of foot drill since it lacks any notable advances that would be worthy of mention in a "history of" section. I suggest moving the US section to a US army article, or a separate aricle linked to from here.

Okay folks, this is what I've been saying about the article from the git-go! Even though I added and expanded the section on Foot Drill in the US Army (of which I have extensive knowledge, I was IN the US Army!), the article still needs a more multi-national flavor. As for the "undue prominence of the US army foot drill", this article is not merely an overview of the HISTORY of Foot Drill, it is an in-depth into what Foot Drill is (and was, if we can build on that). What I suggest is that more people get involved with the article, and bring it into a more world-wide aspect. Edit Centric 04:19, 24 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Merge proposal: Military step into Foot drill

There is currently a slightly different flavor of this article at Military step. What I am proposing is the integration of that article into this one, adding other pertinent material, then submitting that article for deletion / redirection to this one. Clarificaton pls?

"Foot Drill" or "Drill" stems from time since antiquity when soldiers used to march into battle, where they would be expected to gather in a formation, and react to words of command from their commanders once the battle commenced; for example, "Fix Bayonets", which is still used today, albeit not on the battle field, but to provide a spectacle at military events and parades.

A clarification, please? I'm on the verge of adding a comma to make it un-runon-y (among other things), but I don't want to change the meaning to something false. I'm having trouble wih the "time since antiquity when ..." part especially. Is this referring to older times where such commands/actions were used in battle? It's somewhat confusing. Thanks. Mass revert

I just did a complete copy / paste from the last good copy of the article, due to massive article vandalism and missing sections, such as the "History" section.
