Is there any reason why we can't settle on a standardised "main" spelling of this subject for WP purposes? OK, there is an extensive section on alternative spellings, but why does the lede ignore the article title spelling? Bjenks (talk) 06:20, 26 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

There is a long list of people under the heading "Modern Gamilaraay" with no references. My random sampling found that a significant number of these "have Aboriginal heritage", mixed with a lot of non-Gamilaraay ancestry. Should the list be trimmed to only include the people who are recognised by the Gamilaraay people as their own, or who live as a Gamilaraay identity? This should require much tighter references than are presently in the articles for Jason Gillespie or Greg Bird (rugby league) for example. --Scott Davis ^Talk 01:51, 12 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Laterthanyouthink - The reference at Jason Gillespie says

His great grandfather was a Kamilaroi warrior. Gillespie was subjected to some amount of criticism, with some elements from the media saying he had tried to hide his heritage from the outside world. Gillespie said that he always knew about it, but did not want to blow a trumpet.

“It’s hard going from just being a cricketer, then all of a sudden you’re a big ambassador for a whole race of people,” Gillespie said. “It takes a bit of adjusting. I never made a secret of being an Aboriginal heritage. It was just that no one had ever asked me to that point. I’ve always said I’m an interesting mix because I’ve got Aboriginal blood and on my mum’s side is mainly Greek.”^[1]

Do you think that is strong enough that Gillespie is Gamilaraay, or only that he has Gamilaraay heritage? He has seven other great grandparents too. I'd make the same argument that he does not appear to identify as a

Hmmm, that is a tricky one, ScottDavis - but as he seems to have been the first test cricket player to be recognised as Aboriginal (apart from that earlier tour), and apparently the media made a fuss of the fact when it was revealed, that might qualify him for inclusion in this case? I think there are arguments both ways, but I'd probably opt for inclusion as it is a point of interest about the man. Hi Scott, its definitely not up to you to decide who is included in a particular culture. Jason has stated that he is aboriginal, the gamilaraay people (myself included) know of his relatives and recognise this, and that's it. 125.168.21.187 (talk) 23:13, 28 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I can only reiterate that info that is not backed up with reliable sources can (or should) be removed - standard wikipedia. And, for individuals with particular cases, then additional clarifying info is fine. --Merbabu (talk) 06:29, 12 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

PS - i went through the first six or so. The linked biographies in most of these cases don't even mention Indigenous heritage, let alone provide a citation. However, the six have all been put into the "Gamilaraay" category. --Merbabu (talk) 06:39, 12 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

An IP editor recently stated in their edit summary "Gamilaraay refers to our language, Gamilaroi and every other like wise reference refers to the people". If this is the case, then the article probably needs to be renamed or swapped with the
