River Warren vs Warren River

Anyone know why the usual standard (<name> river) is reversed for this river? Every river here

List of Minnesota rivers is standard format. -Ravedave 20:54, 2 June 2007 (UTC)[reply

I don't know why - but I do know that River Warren is the name commonly used. Googling "Warren River" produces several results (OK, 3 million), but looking at the first 10, the "Warren Rivers" that show up are in Australia and Idaho. The MN one appears as River Warren. Does anyone know who Warren was?--Appraiser 00:40, 4 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Very weird. It always drives me nuts because I think of this [1]. Makes me think of a maze of rabbit holes near a glacial river. -Ravedave 02:06, 4 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I think it's this guy. Too bad we can't ask him.--Appraiser 02:27, 4 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
General Warren. I think he's this guy:[2] Per Upham:
The excavation of the valley occupied by Lakes Traverse and Big Stone and the Minnesota River was first explained in 1868 by Gen. G. K. Warren, who attributed it to the outflow from this ancient lake. He made a careful survey of this valley, and his maps and descriptions, with the accompanying discussion of geologic questions, are most valuable contributions to science. After his death, in commemoration of this work, [p.7] the glacial river that was the outlet of Lake Agassiz was named River Warren.[3]
As for the name-- it may be to distinguish a glacial river from a modern river. So the descriptor became part of the proper name (Upham's "glacial Lake Agassiz" has become "Glacial Lake Agassiz".)

FYI - You guys are awesome. A random frustration vented by me, that I didn't expect answered has now ended up with a nice paragraph added to the article. Also I have been looking for a good vantage point to get a shot of the Warren river valley since I live *in* it. -Ravedave 03:42, 4 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Sharp bend?

I was wondering why it makes such a sharp bend near what is now Mankato. Is there any geologic explanation that would improve the article? 206.53.193.36 (talk) 18:14, 3 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I have removed the NNL infobox from this article as the designation covers only a portion of the ancient river channel in Big Stone and Traverse counties in Minnesota and Grant and Roberts counties in South Dakota, with a lake on either side (in context, these are Lake Traverse and Big Stone Lake). See NNL designation. Although the name is "Ancient River Warren Channel", it is clear from the text that the only portion of the river's course with the designation is the area described there.
