Governors' residences

It occurred to me while reading/editing this that the pre-1865 residences of the Governors may not have been vice-regal as is the attribute described in the article; but then it (Govt House) also wasn't 1865-1870 either. But it got me wondering if Governor's residences are a separate category, or if they should be here; I've forgotten their addresses/names - Douglas' and Seymour's that is; Blanshard was put up in a shack, after being at first put in a drafty, damp attic (he wa originally forced to stay on board ship! - getting on J. Douglas' bad side from the start was why, and he wasn't even Governor yet...). What's the case in other former colonies and current ones? Does a Governor's house have any particular name; the original Government House in BC was obviously New Westminster's, unless Victoria had another - ? - in the 1849-1865 period?Skookum1 (talk) 20:55, 18 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I've lost track....was it Kennedy who was L-G in 1865? The first resident after Cary, and first and current vice-regal residents should be named in the article.Skookum1 (talk) 20:55, 18 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
This struck me again while reviewing this article just now:
The first viceregal residence in the area was Cary Castle, built in 1860 by George Hunter Cary and purchased five years later by the British Crown for use as the residence of the Governor of Vancouver Island, Arthur Kennedy being the first resident.
I guess that's the first official viceregal residence, i.e. one built (or rather acquired, in this case) as a Governor's residence; other than the leaky attic they gave Blanshard, Douglas's own farm in James Bay was the gubernatorial residence until....well, until Douglas' retirement; there's a gap in between, I suppose because Governor Seymour preferred Government House in New Westminster (which could use its own article, and there's BC Archives photos go illustrate it)...Douglas' James Bay mansion was, IIRC, about where the rear facade of the current Parliament Bulidings are, or in that back lot behind it). Anyway it seems to me this paragraph needs reworking, although I did add a qualifier to make it clear that Gov Kennedy was the first resident of Cary Castle, not the first governor.Skookum1 (talk) 15:04, 4 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, I've tried to tweak the sentence to make it a bit clearer. I hope it's better. --

Gardens still open?

When I lived in Victoria a long time ago, the grounds were open to the public on certain days, because of their botanical-garden nature partly; is this still the case or has security trumped public access? Some geographical context - a brief description of Rockland, how the house is perched on the bluff over lower Fairfield and the Ross Bay Cemetery and such - would be a nice addition; any Victorian with a good camera lens wanna go take a below from down below? More impressive looking and 'castellate' from that direction IMO.Skookum1 (talk) 21:03, 18 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
