Clarke was certainly appointed conductor of the Carl Rosa company. The Manchester Guardian, 24 June 1893, p.3 says that he was expected to conduct, inter alia

Apologies - I wasn't making myself clear: what I was trying to say, above, is that though I can find unequivocal evidence that Clarke was appointed to the Carl Rosa conductorship I cannot find any evidence that he took up the appointment or indeed ever actually conducted a single performance for the company. Gervase Hughes: "...Hamilton Clarke, who also arranged a brilliant orchestral 'selection' which Sullivan later included in a concert programme..." Not sure if this should be included: the Clarke selection hasn't survived, has it? And if not, how did Hughes know it was "brilliant". Tim riley (talk)
