J. Miles Dale (born in Toronto in 1960) is a Canadian film and television producer and director. He is the president of Demilo Productions, in business since 1986, and received a 2017 Academy Award nomination for producing “The Shape of Water".   Early Life and Education   His father was the British jazz musician Jimmy Dale (1935-2017), who CAME to Canada at the age of 13 AND amongst other early professional accomplishments, accompanied Peter Appleyard as a member of his band in the late 50’s. In the 1960s, his father became a rehearsal pianist and eventually musical director at CBC Television, and in 1968 he moved to Hollywood with his family, where he worked as musical director for programs such as The Smothers Brothers Show, The Andy Williams Show and The Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour. In Los Angeles, Miles was a student at Crossroads School in the first year of the school’s existence (1). In the early 70’s, his family moved back to Toronto where Miles graduated from Jarvis Collegiate Institute (2). He then attended the University of Toronto and the University of British Columbia (where he hosted a jazz show on FM radio), before accepting his first job in the film industry in 1980.   Career   On the television show “Bizarre", which was hosted by John Byner, Dale worked as a production assistant, giving him the opportunity to learn the film business from the ground up. (2) Subsequently he worked as a production manager on a series of live shows, awards shows, situation comedies and a live-to-air television movie called “The Execution of Raymond Graham" (starring Morgan Freeman and Laurie Metcalf) in 1985.   This was followed by a ten year period working as a producer and director on a number of syndicated and network television series such as "Friday the 13th:The Series” (Paramount), "Top Cops” (CBS),  "RoboCop: The Series” and “F/X:The Series” (syndicated). After producing one more TV movie in 1999, “The Mary Kay Letourneau Story” (starring Penelope Anne Miller), Dale moved into feature films.   Dale produced and directed two sequels to the popular film “The Skulls” for Universal, and then the Christmas film “Blizzard” starring Christopher Plummer in 2002. In 2004 he served as Executive Producer of “Hollywoodland" with Ben Affleck, Diane Lane and Adrien Brody, and on “Talk To Me”, featuring Don Cheadle and Chiwetel Ejiofor. Dale was an executive producer on "Scott Pilgrim vs. the World" for Universal in 2009, and this led to an introduction by director Edgar Wright to Guillermo Del Toro. Dale has produced a number of films and TV productions alongside Del Toro, including the hit horror film “Mama” (2013). He then went on to produce and direct multiple episodes on four seasons of FX Network’s television series “The Strain”, which was based on a trilogy of books written by Del Toro and Chuck Hogan.   Most recently Dale produced the Fox Searchlight film “The Shape of Water”, which Del Toro directed (3). The film has won numerous awards, including the Golden Lion as the best picture at the Venice Film Festival, Best Picture at the Critic’s Choice Awards, and best picture at the 2018 Producer’s Guild of America Awards. Amongst many other awards, the film also led the 2018 Golden Globes nominations with seven, the British Academy Award (BAFTA) nominations with fourteen, and the Academy Award nominations for 2018 with thirteen, including a Best Picture nomination for Dale.   Other producing credits are cult favorite Harold and Kumar go to White Castle, Universal’s remake of The Thing (2011), Carrie (starring Julianne Moore and Chloe Grace Moretz/2013), Endless Love (2014) and the MGM romantic drama The Vow (2012), starring Rachel McAdams and Channing Tatum, which generated almost $200 million in worldwide box office (4). Dale has also worked as a director in television including multiple episodes of Shadowhunters (ABC Family/Freeform), The Strain (FX), ’Til Death Do Us Part, Andromeda, Robocop, Sue Thomas: FB Eye, Doc, and several other series.   He resides in Toronto with his partner Sylvie Methot, and has a son (Mathew) and a daughter (Diana)”
