Wrong name

His real name is Jonathan Evans and his real name is sometimes used in the media (examples = [1]). IMO, this article should be named Jonathan Evans (footballer). --Tocino 22:50, 17 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Like you say, his real name is sometimes used in the media. However, he is more commonly referred to as Jonny Evans, so the current title is appropriate. –

Hillary Clinton's real name is
Hillary Rodham Clinton, yet the media mostly refers to her as Hillary Clinton. In cases where there is some ambigiuty as to which name the media uses, we should go with the real name for the title of the article. --Tocino 00:01, 22 August 2008 (UTC)[reply
]
There is no ambiguity here. In a Google search for "jonathan evans", the first ten results refer to the Jonathan Evans who works for MI5, while in a Google search for "jonny evans", nine out of the first ten results refer to the Man Utd footballer. Same goes for similar Google News searches. –

Locked?

Why is this topic locked? I'd like to add a link to the mention of Danny Simpson in the Sunderland paragraph. --Jameswberk (talk) 16:36, 1 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Never mind. Sorted it. --Jameswberk (talk) 16:43, 1 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Needs mentioned that he actually has made his fist team debut even though it says otherwise —Preceding unsigned comment added by 92.24.154.7 (talk) 15:38, 26 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Where does it say Evans hasn't made his first team debut? –

Start of international section. "Despite having not yet made his senior debut for Manchester United" —Preceding unsigned comment added by 78.144.122.191 (talk) 18:25, 1 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Makes sense to me. It says that he hadn't made his Manchester United debut when he was first called up to the NI national team. I can see why you might have interpreted it the way you have, but if you read it properly it makes perfect sense. –

Thought you could use this article in some way: http://www.belfasttelegraph.co.uk/sport/football/premiership/evans-key-to-manchester-uniteds-future-says-owen-14863123.html —Preceding unsigned comment added by 78.150.226.233 (talk) 23:50, 4 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Line on his brother

The line on Corry is outdated. He's too old to play for the academy, so he's now a reserve player, currently out on loan, at Hull. He is also a full international with Northern Ireland.

Northern Irish

Mo ainm needs to outline exactly what the problem is with stating "Northern Irish"? Other than the fact they clearly don't like it going by their edit history in regards to this issue on other articles, what rationale is there for it?

Northern Irish is not an ethnicity. Northern Irish is not a nationality. Northern Irish is an identity for a growing population of Northern Ireland, however Northern Irish is simply a term to refer to someone from Northern Ireland. What is the problem with that? It is nothing new or controversial and attempts to seek its removal on the basis that it implies its an ethnicity or nationality is simply wrong. Its alright to say "from Northern Ireland", however it and "is a Northern Irish" is the same thing with the same meaning but with different grammer.

Might i query as to why Mo ainm hasn't raised this issue over at the relevant WikiProjects rather than sparring over it with continued edits and no discussion especially when editors disagree with him? For if they have a case then a manual of style in regards to it will need to be drawn up, consensed upon and implmented for all articles on people from Northern Ireland.

Mabuska (talk) 12:47, 26 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Also, ‘Northern Irish’ shouldn’t need a citation. The fact that he chooses to represent the NI national team shows that he identifies as that. Zarcadia (talk) 14:23, 26 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
He could identify as British or Irish also, just because he was born in NI doesn't mean he identifies as Northern Irish, same could be said of
Darren Gibson is he now no longer Northern Irish because he doesn't play for NI, he could still consider himself Northern Irish. I also note the term Irish or Northern Irish is not used in that article.Mo ainm~Talk 15:32, 26 May 2011 (UTC)[reply
]
This isn't about what the players identify themselves as, it's about how they are identified in the media. Darron Gibson could be described uncontroversially as an Irish footballer born in Northern Ireland, while Jonny Evans needs only to be described as a Northern Irish footballer. When in doubt, go with what the media says. –
Jay 23:07, 26 May 2011 (UTC)[reply
]
Well you seem to have found a source add it. Mo ainm~Talk 08:38, 27 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Unless he has opted to the contrary, i.e. as Darron Gibson has, then by default Jonny Evans is Northern Irish as he is from Northern Ireland. No source is needed to state Northern Irish as it has the same meaning as "someone from Northern Ireland" and the fact he is from Northern Ireland means we need no source for a bit of grammer. Could be worse, we could be trying to change it to "British" instead. Mabuska (talk) 10:27, 27 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
So Mabuska if you think that Northern Irish and "someone from Northern Ireland" is the same thing you will have no objection to it saying from NI? Bjmullan (talk) 10:33, 27 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
If they are the same thing then do you have no objection to the term "Northern Irish" being used? Nice attempt at trying to entrap me with a question you know i'll say yes to as i've made it clear above they are the same, and then no doubt then suggesting we use that answer as a solution for Mo ainm's PoV pushing, knowing full well that if i object you make me out to look like a PoV pusher like Mo ainm. However nice try...
As they are the same thing, i'm happy for the article to retain the wording its had since January 2008 before Mo ainm's PoV pushing and that wording is "is a Northern Irish". Isn't that a better solution Bjmullan rather than the solution (i'm assuming) you'd propose that would suit Mo ainm's aim perfectly. Mabuska (talk) 13:11, 27 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
The difference is Mabuska I don't believe they are the same thing as a person can be from Northern Ireland but not Northern Irish. Bjmullan (talk) 13:17, 27 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Then take it up at the IMoS or wherever and try to get a MoS agreed and implemented in regards to the issue as sueing for for the exclusion of "Northern Irish" would mean that well over 200 articles linked to it will need to be changed and then any other articles that have it unlinked just to suit a PoV. I already suggested to Mo ainm to take it up at relevant WikiProjects. Mabuska (talk) 13:29, 27 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Mabuska can you try and make an attempt to stay on subject and not use my name with every post, either your argument stands up to scrutiny or it doesn't and saying that an editor has a PoV, which everyone does, is not helpful and diminishes your post to ramblings about someone and not the topic. Now a fair point was raised by Bjmullan if Northern Ireland and Northern Irish are the same what is your objection to the way the text was before you reverted? Mo ainm~Talk 15:03, 27 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Hardly. Might i suggest you read what i posted in my responses to Bjmullan, as they'll answer your question. But to paraphrase, i'm not against it, but why pander to your bias when the article has been this way since January 2008 before your unfounded objections? Also if you can make your arguement stand up to scrutiny then why haven't you taken this to the WikiProjects yet to campaign for a MoS in regards to this issue? Mabuska (talk) 17:21, 28 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I've edited to

is a footballer who plays as a defender for Manchester United and Northern Ireland.

let's get a nice succinct intro and move on...Zarcadia (talk) 11:49, 28 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I reverted that on the following grounds:
  1. That doesn't suffice as it doesn't make clear he is from Northern Ireland, and BLP's tend to make it clear at the start either what nationality they are or where they are from. Maik Taylor amongst others isn't from or even born in Northern Ireland but played for Northern Ireland.
  2. As Mo ainm hasn't provided a case at all as to why we should abandon the way the article has been since January 2008, and as there is no manual of style on it in regards to this issue, there is no need for change unless Mo ainm can prove why it needs changed at all and gets consensus for it from the objectors -
    WP:BRD
    when pushing their pov with their slow edit-war in regards to this issue.
Thus this article should be left as is, and Mo ainm should take their pov on the matter to the WikiProjects and get a consensus that we need to erase or replace "Northern Irish" from Wikipedia. Mabuska (talk) 17:23, 28 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Two things Mabuska, I kind of get what Mo is saying regarding his name (you mentioned it unnecessarily three time in your last post). And if we add "from Northern Ireland" to Zarcadia edit would that make you happy? Bjmullan (talk) 17:32, 28 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Evans is Northern Irish. Nothing wrong with saying it. Take the political campaigns away from Wikipedia, please. Mooretwin (talk) 21:43, 29 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I see Mo ainm is now trying to back-door remove it without discussion by subtley altering the lede to state his place of birth to avoid usage of "Northern Irish" despite the fact the first paragraph already states his place of birth. Undiscussed and clearly pushing their pov in regards to this matter this is simply disruptive and bad faith editing on their part - i don't see such intros at Vinnie Jones, Tom Cruise, Tom Hanks, Hugh Grant, George Best, Oscar Wilde, David Cameron and Éamon de Valera amongst other articles so what precedent is there for it other than to remove "Northern Irish" by the back-door? Mabuska (talk) 15:19, 30 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I will look forward to you coming over to the Darren Gibson article to back the addition of Irish to the lead of his article. Mo ainm~Talk 15:25, 30 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
You mean Darron Gibson? It already states it, however that is a different article on a related but different issue. Mabuska (talk) 15:48, 30 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Am I missing something here?

'While playing for United, he has been their only Northern Irish first team player.' What does this actually mean?? He had number 6 at wba, and Leicester have no number 6. He has no number currently. Shouldn’t he wear number 6? Tombo Elbo (talk) 15:58, 13 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Do you work for Leicester City? Are you in charge of submitting squad lists to the Premier League? If not, I suggest you wait until the person who is responsible for that releases Leicester's squad numbers for the 2018-19 season. –
