A fact from Karkadann appeared on Wikipedia's Main Page in the Did you know column on 15 February 2011 (check views). The text of the entry was as follows: Did you know... that the single horn of the mythical rhinoceros-like Karkadann was said to cure epilepsy and open the bowels, while its tears were claimed to solidify into prayer beads that are still used in Iraq? Largely nonsense. Ibn Battuta in his book of travels, calls a creature he saw in India karkadann, interpreted as "rhinoceros". From this reference (not even quoted), the remainder is spun out of brain candy.--Wetman 06:16, 1 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

It seems to match up with what the Elasmotherium page says, except that this page asserts that Elasmotherium was *definitely* the source of Elansk myths, and the other page only calls this a possibility. I've edited the page to make it clear what's historical fact (fossils of Elasmotherium have been found; myths exist) and what's conjecture. JoeNotCharles 16:08, 5 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Come to think of it, it might be preferable to just shorten this to, "A prehistoric creature called Elasmotherium has many characteristics matching descriptions of karkadann, and it has been speculated that it is the source of several similar Asian legends. See Elasmotherium for more details." That way we don't have to keep this page updated to reflect changes in the Elasmotherium page. JoeNotCharles 16:13, 5 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
