I wish I had more details about UCSB and why they named all that stuff after Geiringer. Maybe there are more details somewhere on the UCSB website.

Or, come to think of it, is there some way to find Wikipedia contributors who are UCSB alumni? Maybe I could drop a note on their user talk page - not sure how to go about this (still a newbie). CaritasUbi (talk) 02:21, 10 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Photograph

I found a photo at http://sunsite.berkeley.edu/uchistory/archives_exhibits/in_memoriam/catalog/geiringer_karl.html. What do I need to do to get permission to use the photo? Can someone point me to guidelines? Thanks.CaritasUbi (talk) 00:28, 11 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Cari. I'm no expert but my impression is that you need to do this:
  • Study this page: [1] as well as the links on it.
  • Email the image owners, and get their permission. The permission has to be a blanket permission, since other people are allowed to copy from WP.
  • Document this permission very carefully, quoting their email, on the image page when you upload it (use the "upload file" link on the WP interface).
  • Choose very carefully the "license" option when you upload, making sure you pick a legal one and not one of the pseudo-licenses they've put there to trick you.
If you do these things, then you have some chance that the image will be allowed to remain here. However, nothing is certain. You need to be sure to watch the image and the articles that use it, because sometimes overzealous editors will delete your image without telling you.
Sorry this sounds so complicated but that does seem to be the way WP images work (that's why I mostly stick to prose!). Good luck to you, and happy editing, Opus33 (talk) 21:24, 11 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Dates of birth and death

The exact date of birth (April 26, 1899) is found in the Freeman, et. al. reference, but I think they've got the date of death wrong (January 12, 1989). At least one other source refers to January 10 - the New York Times obit ("on Tuesday", in an article published Thursday, January 12, 1989). Unlikely the NYTimes would have had the article ready the same day. --CaritasUbi (talk) 01:21, 24 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

This sounds right to me. Opus33 (talk) 15:01, 24 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Additional sources

Haven't had time to go through these carefully, but I managed to find a Geiringer relative who kindly directed me to two additional sources that look valuable:
