I am currently trying to create the article "Land Change Science." Right now it has an overview, sections on origin, influences, and dimensions. I'd like to further expand the dimensions section and create a new section on land change science in practice.Weilh (talk) 18:16, 21 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I had a comment about this line: “For example, massive irrigation projects have triggered the rapid decline of the Aral Sea, which in turn caused events such as the wind-caused spreading of salt from the dry seabed on adjacent agricultural lands” What was the effect of this and what natural cycle did this interrupt? I would have liked to hear a little more of the socio-economic-environmental relationships within land change, or how historically we can see patterns in land change along with the rise of global capitalism. I have learned that many people globally have made major changes their land to lift themselves from poverty that sometimes is a result of exploitation from capitalist superpowers around the world.Savlatt (talk) 20:26, 23 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I expanded the Dimensions section to include Human Impacts, which will eventually have the subsections Deforestation, Agriculture, and Urbanization. I also added more background to the line about the Aral Sea, and made some other small line expansions elsewhere. I agree that socio-economic relationships are important to land change science and want to explore this further in my Human Impacts section. I chose not to include much about capitalism since the article is about a scientific discipline and not Land Use/Land Change Cover itself, but I agree that there are clear social patterns from capitalism that contribute to land change and should be included in discussions about the discipline.Weilh (talk) 00:05, 9 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

My only critique would be in your final section regarding deforestation. You use one source for a discussion about the impacts of migrant small-scale deforestation on land change. I would encourage you to consider the economic impacts on these communities more and add a few more sources on this topic. As of now, it reads as though you are blaming the farmers/laborers for this deforestation rather than focusing on the conditions that led them to these deforestation practices. • Really great start to a very important article! I combined the Origins and Influences section into a History section since they are closely related enough not to warrant their own individual sections. I moved the paragraph about the Aral Sea from the Overview to the Land Cover Monitoring section. I also added a short subsection on Land Change Modeling and its relevance to Risk Assessment, adding one new citation and linking it to the corresponding Wikipedia article. I also made significant changes to the Human Impacts section. First, I expanded the introduction of that section. I also edited the Deforestation subsection so that my entry on a primary cause of deforestation sounded more neutral by including alternate causes of deforestation and adding a source. I also added a picture of deforestation occurring in order to better incorporate human impacts into the article and make it more visually pleasing. Additionally, I added a subsection on urbanization and urban heat islands. In this section, I outline the effects of urbanization on land cover and how this impacts land change science. I also added a picture of an urban area, as well as 5 new sources. Article is also now live on Wikipedia!Weilh (talk) 01:50, 9 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
