Afrikaans, a lingua franca?

One sentence reads "Afrikaans is the only language that comes close to a lingua franca, and is spoken by most black townspeople together with English and their native language". The citation is from 1995, so it's 25 years old. Among young people, English is far more widely spoken. Aren't there some more recent studies we can rely on?
