Crummy citations

When you use citations, be precise -- include page numbers. Also, don't opinionate. Intimate stories about private life without citations are nothing but gossip. "Popular, powerful, blah, blah, blah..." is

I've added a few reliable citations, and changed an incorrect date in the process. A reliable source for expanding this article is Guide to the Leland Hayward Papers, 1920-1995 at the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts. The PDF includes a biography with a wealth of facts; someone could add them to the wikipedia article, as long as it's not a cut-paste job, of course.
