Lee Carsley nationality

Lee Carsley was born in Birmingham and has a British passport. He only qualified to play for the Republic of Ireland through his grandmother. Should he be listed as Irish or English? Obscurasky (talk) 22:52, 16 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

How tenuous his connection to the ROI is is neither here nor there. In a football context, his nationality is Irish, and I see no good reason this list should not reflect that. That said, I'm not convinced these managerial lists need a nationality column. Mattythewhite (talk) 13:53, 17 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
A football club manager isn't representing any country at all while managing his club, so I'm not convinced "footballing nationality" or "representative nationality" are relevant. In terms of civil nationality, I'm guessing Mr Carsley has both British and Irish passports: at the time he played for Ireland, I believe players had to physically possess passports of their representative country to demonstrate their entitlement to them. "English" is only a footballing nationality: if we went to current civil nationality, it'd be either British, or British and Irish, or even just Irish. Which leads us into horrible original research territory. Similarly Chris Hughton, born in London to a Ghanaian father and an Irish mother, raised and schooled in London, played for Ireland, hence footballing-Irish.
I don't think manager lists need a nationality column. Mention nationality in the prose if it's relevant to what you're writing, which generally it isn't or it'd get mentioned more. I'd happily get rid of it (I created this article, but someone else maintains it: @Neil J Murray: do you have a view on Mr Carsley or on the nationality column?) @Mattythewhite: Why did you remove it from List of York City F.C. managers? cheers, Struway2 (talk) 15:23, 17 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I guess the obvious point to make is that it doesn't say 'footballing nationality' (whatever that is), it just says 'nationality', but if 'footballing nationality' is the generally accepted interpretation, I'm happy to accept it. As to the relevance of including nationality at all; I too question the logic of this, but it is pretty much standard across Wiki and, for the sake of continuity, the column should remain. Obscurasky (talk) 15:32, 17 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
It might be the generally accepted interpretation across the football wikiproject, but one does wonder whether our readers appreciate that project's idiosyncrasies. cheers, Struway2 (talk) 16:10, 17 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I removed it because I didn't think it was relevant enough, and it was difficult to source. Mattythewhite (talk) 16:07, 17 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
With the exception of List of York City F.C. managers, I can't find another football managers' list that doesn't include nationality. Idiosyncrasies are unavoidable, but they are rendered less significant where consistency and continuity prevails. Without question, the column should remain, here and elsewhere. Harry Redknapp English 18 April 2017 16 September 2017 13 4 1 8 30.8

Maybe I'm not reading it correctly, but the table says Harry Redknapp managed 13 games, winning 4, but his win percentage is shown as 30.8%. Can someone explain this please. Cheers Obscurasky (talk) 21:45, 3 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Win percentage is number of games won divided by number of games managed expressed as a percentage. So 4 ÷ 13 = 0.308 as a decimal = 30.8% as a percentage.
Just like in the row after Redknapp's, Lee Carsley won 1 of his 3 games managed, so his win percentage is 1 ÷ 3 = 0.333 as a decimal = 33.3% as a percentage. cheers, Struway2 (talk) 22:04, 3 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Edited for clarification (hopefully). cheers, Struway2 (talk) 22:30, 3 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
ok, thank you for that. Obscurasky (talk) 01:16, 4 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
