Scope and completeness

  1. There was nothing to say whether play-off games should be counted, so I added a sentence to say that play-offs would not be counted, as they are separate from the league season. If anyone disagrees, please let's discuss here. Admittedly, I haven't checked if any hat-tricks have been scored in FLC play-offs yet, but it still needs to be thought about.
  2. I have marked the list as incomplete as I found two hat-tricks by Kevin Phillips have been missing since the list was created. If those were missing, it is reasonable to assume that there may be more. Though each individual entry is sourced, I don't see anything that can vouch for the list's completeness. Until we have that assurance, I suggest we keep the list marked incomplete. --Jameboy (talk) 16:32, 16 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

First Division hat-tricks

A number of hat-tricks have been added to the list that pre-date the Championship's inception in August 2004. I suggest we create List of Football League First Division hat-tricks and move those entries there. --Jameboy (talk) 23:06, 21 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

What was prior to 2002? I would guess those are in the article as the appear in the source. Though now I see there are a few in the source which aren't in the article. --SuperJew (talk) 06:15, 22 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
The source ([1]) uses 2002 as an arbitrary cut-off point, perhaps because their data is incomplete. If they wanted to include only the Championship, there should be nothing prior to August 2004. If they wanted to include all second tier hat-tricks, they could have gone all the way back to 1892 or perhaps started in 1992, when the First Division became the second tier following the inception of the Premier League as the new top level. I only see two possible choices: to move the pre-August 2004 hat-tricks to a separate list or to expand the definition of this list to include all second tier hat-tricks. I favour the first option as the list will become very large if all second tier hat-tricks from history are included. --Jameboy (talk) 15:53, 22 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I agree with your analysis. I would be interested if we could get an answer from the source if there is a reason for the 2002 cut-off point. And agree to remove the pre-August 2004 hat-tricks as is this is a list of Championship hat-tricks. Maybe post a note on
WT:FOOTY to get some more opinions? --SuperJew (talk) 15:57, 22 March 2018 (UTC)[reply
