Additional Advocates

Vote to add Georgina Bloomberg to this list of animal advocates. Bloomberg currently serves on the board of the Hampton Classic Horse Show,[1] the Emma and Georgina Bloomberg Foundation[2] and the Bloomberg Family Foundation.[3] She sits on the board of trustees for the U.S. Equestrian Team.[4] Bloomberg is also a vice president at Animal Aid USA.[5]

In 2016, the

Humane Society of the United States recognized Bloomberg with the Compassion in Action Award "for her tireless work to protect all animals."[6][7]

She is a founding member of Humane Generation/Friends of Finn committee, which works with the Humane Society of the United States to end the inhumane treatment of dogs in puppy mills and advocates for pet adoption.[8]

Format of List

There seems to be an extra column on the List. I fixed one problem with it. I can't work out this one though.

The addition of Adolf Hitler to this list

To the wikipedia community,

Can I receive your opinion on the addition of Hitler to this list? I appreciate this is a controversial issue, but I believe Hitler was a famous animal rights activist. The Nazis were the first political party in Europe to pass laws to regulate livestock slaughter in 1931, and they also banned vivisection in 1933. Hitler then passed a several laws concerning animal welfare in the following years. He was also known to practice vegetarianism for at least some of his life.

All of this information is explained and referenced in the paper cited and linked below.

Arnold Arluke & Boria Sax (1992) Understanding Nazi Animal Protection and the Holocaust, Anthrozoös, 5:1, 6-31, DOI: 10.2752/089279392787011638 https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.2752/089279392787011638

I propose Hitler is added to this list given the above information. It is a lesser-known but interesting aspect of Hitlers psychology, and indeed the politics of the Nazis. I think the readers of wikipedia would be interested to know that Hitler was an animal rights advocate, and of course, to make up their own minds about what this means.

Thank you for reading, I look forward to hearing your thoughts, Patrick Patrickmckennaniab (talk) 23:01, 10 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Animal rights and animal welfare are not the same thing. Towards the end of his life Hitler took interest in animal welfare but he was not an animal rights activist. We have an article on

Celebrities on list

I'm seeing an awful lot of celebrities/entertainers being put on this list, and I think a case can be made for some extensive pruning. Just because someone is notable for something completely unrelated to animal rights advocacy and has had some source or another, particularly either a glossy fandom publication or a non-independent publication from an animal rights group seeking some celebrity-by-association for themselves, doesn't mean that advocating for animal rights has been a

WP:NPOV. On the other hand, I recognize that "advocating" can be understood pretty inclusively, and a case can be made for having an exhaustive list. --Tryptofish (talk) 20:46, 21 November 2023 (UTC)[reply

I propose to remove the following:

I've checked our pages on each of these persons. Most of them are celebrities, where there is only passing or insignificant mention of their advocacy on their bio pages. Some of them are other types of public figures, where I either found no mention of animal rights or only a mention of things that are not animal rights, such as dietary views. I want to emphasize that I'm not proposing to remove celebrities where we have more-than-passing mention of animal rights or animal welfare advocacy. --Tryptofish (talk) 18:54, 18 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I support deleting all of those celebrities apart from the Barbi Twins who actually do a lot of animal activism. You are correct none of those other celebrities are notable for animal activism, I believe they should be removed immediately. In some cases there is hardly mention of animal rights on their article. We need to remove all those people from the list, they are not animal rights activists. This problem has plagued Wikipedia for years. Basically there is usually one source (usually PETA) which will describe a celebrity as supporting animal rights. Just because there is a one off mention of a celebrity supporting animal rights does not mean they are an activist. The animal rights activist category was also incorrectly used for many individuals but that issue has now been fixed. Psychologist Guy (talk) 23:22, 18 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, that's helpful feedback. I'm going to leave this open for a few more days, and then remove any who are not contested. --Tryptofish (talk) 23:36, 18 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
 Done. --Tryptofish (talk) 22:26, 20 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I recently did a search scan for animal rights activist on Wikipedia. Most of the people being cited as activists are celebrities but when you visit their article they have only made a handful comments about animals, supported an animal charity or done a one-off advertisement for PETA, this doesn't mean they are "animal rights activists". Also the animal rights activist has been included in the "occupation" section for the inbox on many celebrity articles. I have corrected a few. In many cases this is a bad case of
WP:OR. An animal rights activist is someone like Cleveland Amory or Karen Davis (activist). It's getting stupid when every celebrity is somehow now an activist when they clearly are not. I will continue to fix this issue. Psychologist Guy (talk) 22:48, 9 January 2024 (UTC)[reply
