Perhaps move him to the disputed section?  Not done: What you're saying isn't supported by the text in that article. The article says he was convicted twice and suspected in others, which puts him below the threshold as Deacon Vorbis says. If he's confessed to nine, that should be in the article, and even then is borderline for inclusion here. Even if agreed to here, this can't be added to the live list until the draft article is moved into mainspace. ‑‑ElHef (Meep?) 15:07, 5 May 2020 (UTC)

Smiley Face Killers are probably not real

Most people who talk about the Smiley Face Killers only do so because they imagine it as this gigantic criminal underworld that has killed hundreds of privileged white men, when most sources and crime analysts see it as a series of coincidences of drunken men committing accidental suicides, that just so happen to occur nearby an extremely common graffitti. It just feels disingenuous to have the SFK on here. Mebigrouxboy (talk) 22:15, 24 October 2021 (UTC)

Terminology

The lists here are lists of persons *convicted* of multiple murders. I study statistical issues in investigating and prosecuting alleged Health Care Serial Killers. There are several academic papers listing known cases and studying the characteristics of the convicted persons. This leads to something called "red flag" lists which are prepared by, and intended for use by, criminologists, health care administrators, forensic psychologists, profilers. What is perhaps not recognised is that many of the cases collected by researchers from criminology and forensic psychology are disputed or disputable. (Of course, they will miss the ones who get away with it). In fact, from time to time the lists get revised and "red flags" inspired, for instance, by the Dutch case of Lucia de Berk, get removed from the newer lists. Also, a proviso gets added that the red flag of "high death rate on their shifts" is rather unreliable. OK, that's good. People have learnt about spurious correlations and about confounding factors.

I think these red flag lists tell us what characteristics get someone *convicted* of being a serial killer. For instance, if you are a nurse and your fellow nurses gossip about you, and think you are a bit sinister person, and if you have just any history of psychiatric problems, judges and juries will be more easily convinced that you are a cold-blooded killer, even if there is almost no hard evidence again you.

In the health care context, things are really difficult. The problem is that health care workers work in places where lots of people die "normally", ie, in the normal run of things. If a case is brought to trial, the court has to identify whether or not any murders took place, and only secondarily who is responsible for them, if there were any murders. It seems clear that the chance that any particular nurse you meet is a serial killer nurse is less than 1 in a million, see http://longtermcareinquiry.ca/wp-content/uploads/Exhibit-163 Expert-Report-of-Professor-Beatrice-Crofts-Yorker.pdf This means that evidence of ill-doing, and moreover, ill-doing by a particular person, needs to be very strong in order to overcome the prior odds of innocence. A second problem is that all information has to come from the hospital and from medical workers in the hospital. Such people are not forensic scientists. Their primary duty is to protect their patients and a secondary duty is to protect the reputation of their institution (in order to retain the confidence of their patients...). They are the ones who call in the police after having made their own internal investigations, and they have a high degree of control over information going to police investigators and to the courts. Of course, they consist of well-intentioned people doing the best they can in the context they find themselves.

I think it is important to make it very clear that the *legal* category "serial killers" is not the same as the "moral" category "serial killers". This is obviously a problem for Wikipedia since "truth" is not a recognised criterium. The criterium "reliable sources" is objective, but it is a bureaucratic / legal criterium. In what order are the killers that have the same amount of victims in? They're not alphabetical, nor are they chronologically. Nor are they alphabetically by country. Aquatic Ambiance (talk) 17:54, 27 July 2022 (UTC)

TBH this page is a hodgepodge of additions from IP editors and later editing/fixes by well meaning editors like you and I. I have been watching this page for years and its a constant battle to keep the wolves at bay. That being said, my suggestion is alphabetical by last name. Limit the page to serial killers with at least 5 kills

Seeing that this page is getting to be quite long, maybe it's an idea to limit the amount to serial killers with at least 5 kills? Aquatic Ambiance (talk) 18:22, 7 August 2022 (UTC)

Based on the definition of the term serial killer the limit of 3 murders makes sense. PediaViking (talk) 11:59, 11 August 2022 (UTC)

Gerard John Schaefer should be added to this list

He is on your list of United States serial killers, but that list conflates "proven" kills with the number of kills for which he was indicted and sentenced. He was sentenced for two murders, with 2 life sentences, I believe. His other murders had not yet come to light. For what ever reason (economic efficiency?) The wheels weren't really turning for further indictments till shortly before he was killed by a fellow inmate nearly two decades later, in '94. Also, according to an article at miamighostchronicles.com, two murders from '66 were taken off cold-case status in 2007 and attributed to him. I would suggest that he very easily could have been found guilty in court of several more murders, and if you read the main Wiki article on him, you will understand why.

I don't normally read about this stuff, but after recently stumbling across a place called Oak Hammock Park on one of my bike rides, and enjoying the hiking trails there, I took a closer look at it on Google maps, and a 'pin' marking something called "the Devil Tree" appeared. (That's what sent me down this rabbit hole.) Turns out, this tree was the very location where this monster took the lives of Collette Goodenough and Barbara Wilcox, (both from Iowa), in '73. He buried them nearby. Their personal effects, including a driver's license and a passport, were among the items found in Schaefer's steamer trunk that same year. Their remains were discovered partially exposed 4 years later by a hog hunter. It was still a wild area then, but now it's a park surrounded by a sprawling neighborhood and on the edge of canal c-24.
And so you see that the "proven" column is a bit vague and open to interpretation. It might improve the listing format to replace this with 2 columns: "murder indictments" and "murders not brought to trial though very strongly supported by evidence". If a third category doesn't make it all just too cumbersome, it could be the one for "other murders deemed possible, but arguable" 2601:589:8401:3D40:3487:E9EB:AD95:7299 (talk) 00:51, 13 August 2022 (UTC)

Incorrect dates for DeAngelo

Next to Joeseph Deangelo's name it says his span of murders was 1979 to 1986. This is incorrect. As stated in his arrest warrant, DeAngelo committed his first murder, that of Claud Snelling, in 1975, a further attempted murder of a police office later in 1975, and the double murder of Brian and Katie Maggorie in February 1978. Its foolish to make such a large list not editable, there's obviously going to be many mistake that Wikipedia won't let be fixed. Dtjprice88 (talk) 02:28, 22 October 2022 (UTC)

Clementine Barnabet number of proven victims should be dropped from 35 to 1

Clementine Barnabet is listed in this article as having 35 proven victims, but her main article details it as 1-35 and says all but one of those were based on a confession that wasn't taken seriously by analysts or even the authorities, since she was released after a few years. 5.151.172.162 (talk) 20:03, 21 October 2022 (UTC)

True! The whole list is riddled with factual errors. Dtjprice88 (talk) 02:28, 22 October 2022 (UTC)

The fifth column is also basically useless, since the "number of possible victims killer could have murdered" is just the largest number claimed by anyone without evidence. Somehow Gary Ridgeway having been convicted of 49, suspected of 90 and having 71 confessed has been calculated as a possible victim count of "71-90+". The notation used doesn't even seem sure if it wants to start or end the interval at 90 because its arbitrary. 5.151.172.162 (talk) 23:26, 22 October 2022 (UTC)

"Christopher Lee Watts (born May 16, 1985)[1] murdered his pregnant wife Shanann by strangulation, and their two children Bella (4) and Celeste (3) by smothering them. He buried Shanann in a shallow grave near an oil-storage facility, and dumped his children's bodies into crude oil tanks. Watts initially maintained his innocence in regard to them missing, but was arrested on August 15 after confessing in an interview with detectives to murdering Shanann. He admitted to murdering his children later."

Discussion about maybe doing a merger

I’ve started a discussion at Talk:Lists of serial killers#Redundancy in lists of serial killers to discuss maybe merging a bunch of lists together as “List of serial killers after the 19th century”, and then later that merge target can be split up by time period if necessary. There doesn’t seem to be any need for any separate lists “by country” or “by number of victims” because a single chronological table can always be easily sorted to provide that information. If you mean Wikipedia's Richard Cottingham article, the lead sentence's citation [1] is this same L.I.P. reference – and I just added a summary table detailing the 17 killings, all of which have inline citations to published sources within the "Murders" and/or "Convictions and confessions" sections of the article text.
