Duplication here

There already exists Category:Towns in Western Australia, so should this page be removed? What normally happens?

I added Category:Towns in Western Australia to all towns on this list that didn't alredy have it, The category page now has all these and more so seems that it is the prime reference.

I agree, in the absence of any objections I propose the following:
  • This page is replaced with a redirect to Category:Towns in Western Australia
  • At the time this is done, I will manually check all the entries in the list appear in the category
  • The links from
    Wikipedia:List of lists and Wikipedia:List of lists/uncategorized
    are deleted
Seperately to (and not really effected by) that change I propose:
  • The links from
    List of Australia-related topics
are changed to Category:Towns in Western Australia.

Having thought about it for another ten seconds, perhaps I am being too hasty. If you look at the link from the Western Australia page, it does not seem unreasonable to maintain such a list. Although it's content will be identical to the category it is possible to link to it, whereas I can't work out how to link to a category (they always appear down the bottom), and if I can't then perhaps other contributors would have the same problem.
There is precedent for it, there is a Category: Local Government Areas of Western Australia as well as a
Local Government Areas of Western Australia
page. This seems like an issue that may have arisen before. I think I should discover if there is some policy before I wade into to eliminating it.

Thanks to
Wikipedia:Categories, lists, and series boxes
. The guideline (and Postdlf) say the list can be especially useful it contains red links. Another good point is that the list can be arranged in any order whereas the category is stuck with alphabetical.
With this cleared uo I think the way forward will be to:
  • Make the list complete from an authoritive source (perhaps the post code list, or geoscience australia)
  • Think about better ways of arranging it - perhaps by region with a map showing the regions

I have done that update from the Australian Postcode list. As a consequence of my automated processing some worthy towns did not make the list (Dampier, New Norica) and a number of two dog towns do appear. If your town is missing feel free to add it. Some of the names in the old list were of dubious inclusion value - Perth and Fremantle along with Bunbury and Geraldton are cities - but I would still like them here. I am not sure about
Forrest River Mission - the entry for it says they have 10,000 population but they do not have a postcode and I can find no trace of them on Google. There is a Forrest River (ie an actual river) up near the NT border so I guess that is them. In any case I have retained all the places on the previous list. It might be good to go through these again with a census list to see who has been missed and who has been included without merrit. IanBailey 02:04, 8 November 2005 (UTC)[reply

Good work with the list update Ian. I am also keen on expanding the articles on WA towns when time allows. The facts in the
Eighty Mile Beach, Zanthus, etc, none of which I believe are towns. Anyway enough rambling... Nachoman-au 12:42, 8 November 2005 (UTC)[reply

Forrest River Mission

The common name for Forrest River Mission is now oombulgurri. I therefore moved that article to

Missing Towns

Individual post code shouldnt be the definition of a town, Wubin wasnt on the list for this reason yet there is already a wiki page for the town. I added some other towns in the Murchison region that had been missed. I worked on the basis that if the Government of the time surveyed the town site then it should be there. I add abandoned next to town sites that are. Gnangarra 11:10, 14 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Big Bell

I listed as abandoned because as the town site as surveyed is, though there is a mining camp outside the town limits. This area is restricted access to mine company personnel only so i dont think it rates as a town site. Gnangarra 11:10, 14 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Kyrup

In the list of towns "Kyrup" appears, although I cannot find it on any map or landagte of other source for information on Western Australian towns. Kyrup is only ever used as a mis-spelling of Kirup (as far as I can tell). Can anyone confirm its existance? --Hughesdarren (talk) 01:51, 10 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Wallal

Wallal, Western Australia is given as the site of observation of a 1922 solar eclipse in the article Eddington experiment#Criticism and legacy (see reference Thumbler). There is a Wallal, Queensland but the reference gives Western Australia as the state. A certain historic accuracy and importance is at stake here. Rgdboer (talk) 04:36, 15 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
