English Name

Hi, I happend to go to this university, and I whonder if the name's translated right. In Germany, it reads "Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität", the "s" being a typical suffix for bavarian institutions etc. named after a person as in Karlsplatz (Stachus) or Odeonsplatz. Is it official communication of LMU or another vaild source that Ludwig Maximilian is written without that "s"? Thank you, Schwoagl (talk) 09:17, 6 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I am not sure I understand "we do not use 's" correctly. The name of the university is with "Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München" including hyphens and the s in Maximilians. For example on their web page they have this question as a FAQ [[1]] how to translate the name and also the Shanghai ranking gets it right: [[2]]. It seems to me you could analogously argue it should be John Hopkins instead of Johns Hopkins University as John is the name and not Johns. Atdotde (talk) 14:44, 20 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

It is just a "Fugen-s": A vocal is following a consonant, so you can add a "s". It is a bit hard to speak out two consonants. It's not 'Bavarian', but typical of German in general. However, the author of this article uses Ludwig Maximilians University and Ludwig Maximilian University interchangeably, which is a bit embarrassing for what purports to be an 'encyclopaedia' [LOL]. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.68.94.86 (talk) 16:22, 2 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

The s in Maximilians indicates the genitive case of the given name Maximilian, which in this case is essentially the German equivalent of 's. Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich → Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität of Munich – This is a proper name and should be used also in English language texts according to the university web page [[3]]. In particular, the 's' in Maximilians is not a feature of contemporary German grammar which would go away in translation. The similar case of the University of Würzburg has the s in Maximilians but not the dashes. This move would revert a move from the past. --Relisted.     WP:EN, English names are to be used on English Wikipedia. The proposed title is a weird blend of English and German. The article quoted does not support this blend. It does provide the English alternative "LMU Munich", for use in writing, however very specifically also states that this translation should not be used in titles. German grammar regarding the letter 's' is also irrelevant for an English name. The title therefore should remain as Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich.   • Comment. Let me reiterate: the 's' is not about grammar. It is a proper name. If you don't like mixing languages (with Universität as part of a name and Munich more of a description) I would go with Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München as this is what the university itself says is its proper name. Let me quote another example: BMW is of course listed with the abbreviation but in the definition Wikipedia does not translate Bayrische to Bavarian. Or [Deutsche Bank] is not translated to German Bank. Or Commerzbank vs. Commerce Bank. Or the other way round: McDonald's is the same in the German Wikipedia even though grammatically correct would be McDonalds. Or Volkswagen vs. People's Car.     • Wikipedia policy is to translate names into English if they commonly appear in that form in English-language sources and not to translate them if they don't. It's not to make up names. I'm neutral as to which name we use - my personal instinct is always to go with the native name (with a few exceptions, like Munich (the city), which have become so entrenched in English that it would be pretentious to use the native name), but that's not what the community has decided. If a lot of English-language sources use
      WP:USEENGLISH says, although it's what many editors seem to think it says. We can get round the mixing of languages by using Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität (Munich) or Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität, Munich, as the city's name then becomes a qualifier, which is acceptable. -- Necrothesp (talk) 15:50, 30 April 2015 (UTC)[reply

I agree, that historically of course the "s" indicated possession. But even in current German you would not use an "s" in that place as for example can be seen in the names of other German universities with person names in the university names such as

Martin_Luther_University_of_Halle-Wittenberg. This demonstrates that the "s" is not required by grammar and is thus (at least in today's language) part of a given name. It is impossible to "translate" this from German as it is not proper (current) German. But I give up. Atdotde (talk) 09:31, 11 May 2015 (UTC)[reply

Concerning G. Jauch

This individual might be mentioned in a German edition of Wikipedia but not in the world-wide English one. If one takes a look at other online-encyclopedias about world-wide celebrities, he mostly and rightly is not mentioned. So, why here? The German language is the frontier of the knowledge of his name. By the way, I lived for some years, in Germany. He is a type of a German guy that only can be successful among the Germans... In the U.K.or U.S.A., he is and only could be as famous as Mr. or Mrs. Hastings... It really is a joke to mention him, here!
