Is it a village? No. Was it a village? Maybe. Will it be a village? Uhhh...

This is a really confusing article- there's no village called Mahaica in the 2012 census, but I think the whole area around the river of the same name was sort of a village at some point. It's confusing, but I also can't find a source to explain the discrepancy or actually "define" what villages make up this 'sub-region'. The conclusion that it's a sub-region seems like OR when it's pieced together from each mention of an associated village (and there's a lot more than what is mentioned in this article).

History aside, Mahaica might have a village-status in it's future (ie. in the 2022 census). "Allow me to make a pitch for Mahaica to be considered to be made a town whenever the next round for the naming of towns arises. This means that the Unity– Vereeniging NDC has to rise to the challenge," from a 2020 Editorial seems to imply there could be some legal recognition for this area. The article that I added as a citation about Mahaica getting a branch of Demerara Bank, led me to DB's website, where the branch address also seems to be a 'city' name.

So from what I could dig up, I'm not confident enough for an AFC, nor confident of notability. If it isn't incorporated by the next census, it may warrant deletion and a note added to the River article saying "villages around the river make up the Mahaica sub-region" unless some good historical sources turn up. Leaving my thoughts here in hopes it can save a little work in the future. Estheim (talk) 20:53, 5 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
