Ucubi

The name of the city in Baetica from which Annius Verus would come from is Ucubi or "VCVBI" in old roman ortography, not Uccibi which doesn't appear in any ancient source. It appears as Ucubi in Pliny Historia Naturalis, book 3, chapter 9, listing the colonies of Baetica. It appears that way also in De Bello Hispaniensi, not only in its normal nominative form Ucubi (chapter 20) but also several times declined in accusative as Ucubim and with an additional mention as the name for its inhabitants (Ucubensis).

On the other hand the main source for Annius Verus origins, the dubious and late compilation Historia Augusta, mentions as "ex Succubitano municipio ex Hispania", but there is not such city in Hispaniae so it's most probably a late confusion between the plural of the latin word succubus and the real city of Ucubi.--185.210.17.131 (talk) 11:20, 15 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
