The Great Australian Silence

Where is the rest of the history? It didn't just begin in 1788. It was/is called Bulanaming. The traditional owners of the land are Gadigal people of the Eora Nation. 120.18.164.26 (talk) 13:03, 24 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Suggestion

This page is a valuable informative and visual source with many quality images of Marrickville. Perhaps if someone could note who manufactures Marrickville Road Shops awning adornments it would be appreciated.

Marrickville Metro a locality?

Australia Post recognises it, Geoscience Australia doesn't. http://www1.auspost.com.au/postcodes/index.asp?Locality=marrickville+metro&sub=1&State=&Postcode=&submit1=Search http://www.ga.gov.au/bin/gazm01?placename=Marrickville+Metro&placetype=R&state=NSW

A locality is by definition unofficial anyway - so it's entirely debatable.

The residential area of Marrickville around Enmore Park (close to Marrickville Metro Shopping Centre) is entirely separated by light industrial zoning from the rest of Marrickville [1]. It has a character more similar to Enmore than the rest of Marrickville. It also has it's own post office. Hence residents often refer to it as Marrickville Metro. —The preceding

No, a locality isn't necessarily unofficial. Localities, neighbourhoods and "historical localities" are gazetted by the Geographical Names Board (eg [2] [3]). "Marrickville Metro" isn't, which is why it doesn't appear on the Geoscience Australia database. As you say, there is a post office at the Metro, which is why Australia Post uses the name for a delivery area. The fact that residents refer to the area with that name is slightly strange at first, but that is the way names evolve, and it may lead to it being gazetted. Until then, or at least until there is a serious source, not jsut what some residents use, I don't think it should be mentioned in the lead section on the same level as Marrickville South. Of course, adding information about the different natures of different parts of Marrickville as part of a "Geography" or "Characteristics" section would be great, as long as it is
original research. JPD (talk) 11:52, 9 January 2007 (UTC)[reply

Distance from CBD

A distance of 6.3 km is much too precise for areas as big as the CBD and Marrickville. The distance varies quite a bit depending on which part of both you measure from. Given that one of the other options "Cocky flies" gives for Sydney-Marrickville is 7km [4], and the location it is using for "Marrickville" in both cases is closer to the city than a lot of the suburb, I think 7 km is probably a fair measurement to the nearest km. Federterranian Houses

Not too sure how relevant this is, and if it is included it should perhaps be shown in conjunction with typical Federation Architecture in the area to highlight the juxtaposition bewtween the original and renovated styles. Otherwise i think it should be deleted —The preceding

Do you mean the pictures and section heading, or are you bothered by the text as well? The text seems reasonable, although it could do with a source, but I would agree that having the pictures seems a bit overboard. JPD (talk) 11:32, 16 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The Picture

This may not be the right section but this is probably the best place to be heard.

The picture has trees with no leaves on them, but the climate in Sydney never drops much below 10 degrees C.

How did the leaves fall off? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 99.246.137.161 (talk) 01:53, 6 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Notable people - John Farrow

I added John Farrow to "Notable people". Libstar - did you have an issue with that because his Wikipedia article makes no mention of Marrickville? There's plenty of external references to his origins:

https://www.smh.com.au/culture/movies/the-forgotten-life-of-australia-s-most-prolific-hollywood-director-and-the-tall-stories-he-told-20210719-p58b21.html

https://www.theguardian.com/film/2021/nov/09/john-farrow-the-star-australian-director-who-hollywood-forgot

and so on - just google: "john farrow" marrickville

I did a bit of digging but so far have been unable to lock down the actual address where he grew up - will keep trying. There's enough good external articles to justify adding a reference to Marrickville in his Wikipedia article. He's a fascinating character.

BTW - I also just added John Kennedy's Love Gone Wrong - Miracle in Marrickville to the music videos. Copy at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=awc9y8-xOc0 1.43.41.96 (talk) 01:57, 3 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
