Mdewakanton - Ojibwe?

Does a component of the Mdewakanton really survive in the Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe?? If so, how did that little anomaly come about?I left a message on the talk page of CJLippert, who wrote the entry and clearly knows a lot more about Native history than I.TjoeC (talk) 14:54, 20 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I've never heard of this, I really don't think it's true, do to the general hostility between the two groups; does anyone have any actual prof of this? Spoudaiogeloion (talk) 22:41, 10 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

What is their connection with the Mystic Lake Casino in Minneapolis? --Atikokan (talk) 03:55, 24 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Santee from South Carolina?

Where does this 'Santee Dakota are from South Carolina because a river there is named the Santee river after the Santee tribe' come from? I see this written here and there as fact but who's fact? Just because a river is called 'Santee' after a tribe called the 'Santee' who lived on the eastern seaboard, does not mean they are the same people as the BdeWakantonwan in Minnesota. The american 'Santee' as a name for the eastern Dakota tribes is a fudged pronunciation and derives from 'Isanyati' or 'knives'

Dakota origin is from the 'Bdote', the place where the Mississippi and the Minnesota river meet, Where the name of the town called Mendota is derived. 'Bde Wakan' is 'Spirit Lake'. Americans use 'Mde' for 'lake' instead of 'Bde'.

A pronunciation problem

In the article, a spelling (in letters: Bdewákhaŋthuŋwaŋ) is given as a pronunciation. Any linguist can tell you that these aren't the same thing at all: think about the English spelling of knight, which has no /k/ or /g/ sound. A pronunciation should be specified using the standard IPA system, but @Oncamera: reverted my edit here: [1]. Perhaps somebody with more linguistic knowledge can fix this. The pronunciation and name used to be Mdewakantonwan and now they say Bdewakantonwan and pronounce the name of their band as Bdewakantonwan for this Dakota band. The Prairie Island official website even uses it and they are Bdewakantonwan. No one is claiming Mde and Bde are pronounced the same way but Dakota people now say Bde such as Bde Maka Ska, which was a recent remaining of a lake in Minneapolis back to the Dakota name. The old form was Mde but modern Dakota people want to speak and use the modern form of saying lake, Bde. You can check in online Dakota dictionaries such as the Sisseton-Wahpeton college dictionary for Bde/Mde or the new Dakhóta Iápi Wičhóie Wówapi app, which has the listing for Bdewakantonwan and explains the former name as the Mde variant.  oncamera  (talk page) 13:59, 23 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
