The English translation

Is there widespread consesus that Moderata samlingspartiet or Moderaterna should be rendered as "the Moderate Party"? I would prefer it to either remain in its original Swedish form when used in English or else it should be translated as "Conservative Party of Sweden" or "Right-Wing Party of Sweden". --Big Adamsky 17:57, 27 November 2005 (UTC)

I would vote to keep it at the present name, or possible move it to
Moderates (Sweden). Conservative Party of Sweden would be bad, as it is 1) debatable whether that is a correct caracterization of the party today (its more liberal-conservative) and 2) the name 'Conservative Party' has been used by another group in Sweden. 'Right-wing Party' would also be wrong. It was the previous name of the party, and the party took a conscious descision to change it. --Soman

The official name of the party in English is the Moderate Party, hence we should use that! JWT

A note on the origin of the "bourgeois" parties

I removed the following from the article:

"As all burgeoise parties of Sweden, M was originally sprung from Lantmannapartiet, an assosciation of conservatives in the first chamber of the Riksdag."

This is not true, as the

Liberal People's Party was founded before from a very different group, in 1895 or 1900 (see the article). The Centre Party was founded as Bondeförbundet in 1913. The Christian Democrats
were founded much later, in 1964.

On a seperate note, non-Swedes are not familiar with the Swedish system of using letters to represent political parties, so it would be sensible to avoid using it in articles (although there is a case for putting the letters in the List of political parties in Sweden article). Social conservative?

"Since Fredrik Reinfeldt became party leader the party has moved to the center and the much of the libertarianism has been replaced by a more social conservative policy." What are the reasons for believing the Moderate Party has become more social conservative in recent years? To me, it is difficult to see any social conservative thinking in their current party program (http://www.moderat.se/politik.asp?mainid=2&subid=0)

Well, they do seem to compete with the social democrats on who can be the most socialistic. Reinfeldt even accused (s) of wanting to lower taxes too much a few months ago. It's insane. /Alk
That's nonsense. Utter nonsense. How about you read a few books about him and one infamous book by him? Factually erroneous and highly misrepresentative statement.
I have updated the Social conservatism article with this Nordic concept of it, but you are right: It is a completely different concept than US Social Conservatism. Carewolf 05:56, 8 May 2007 (UTC)

Today

Apart from being heavily biased, the english of this section is more or less incomprehensible. "/.../the party has apart from raising the price of every sort of gas there is reduced the scope of its tax-cutting policies by attacking the weak,sick and impaired financially and started to emphasise issues such as education, health-care and the importance of blue-collar workers." - a sentence which doesn't make any sense at all and is far from neutral. I'm not sure what would be a good substitute and addition though, so I tagged the section with POV dispute. Any thoughts? --Akinara 15:45, 19 September 2007 (UTC)

There is a perception among many, even in media articles, that the party is funding tax cuts for the wealthy, by cutdowns in the welfare state. Liberal conservatism?

Their moral conservatism differ from the American sense, though. Afaik, they're for both gay marriage and legal abortions etc., while also proposing a stronger police force and similar. 惑乱 Wakuran (talk) 11:12, 2 March 2010 (UTC)
Liberal-conservatism means they are free-market oriented, as opposed to Christian Democratic, in their economic views. Liberal in this sense doesn't refer to social views.

This needs to be corrected

There is no mention that the party voted against universal suffrage and womens right to vote instead the text gives the illusion that the party was for it, these 2 parts need to be added. Fishbulp22 (talk) 09:29, 29 December 2009 (UTC)

It should be further displayed that the party never willingly approved of universal suffrage or any welfare reforms what so ever under it´s existence, but I wait until I can add it in a non-partisan way...
