Not necessarilly, some people in the middle ages would have received royal gifts - for example, Henry VIII Granted Thomas More umpteen Swans and Hams as part of his being Lord Chancellor (with which he had to maintain his estate), IIRC hieratic is teh word to describe that. Also, again, the Inca Empire would have been a non-barter natural economy...--Red Deathy 08:50, 31 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
