I find this sentence difficult to understand:

The banks of the river are covered mainly by deciduous trees that extend into halfway between Bugaria and Greece where it forms the today's boundary with Macedonia (Greece) and Thrace as well as the Kavala and the Xanthi prefectures.

I would welcome some clarification. /Nicke L 14:43, 24 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Mesta -> Nestos
I see that according to the wiki rules for rivers with multiple names

Wikipedia:RIVERS#Rivers_with_multiple_names
, Nestos is the preferred name since:

  • the river is particularly famous or most commonly mentioned under this name. According to (english language) google hits: "Mesta river": 12,500, "Nestos river": 22,800 hits.
  • According to the present article the Bulgarian part is 126 km lenght while the river is of 230 km lenght. Moreover, according to this source: [[1]]: The river flows some 230 km through Bulgarian and Greek territory before emptying into the Aegean Sea. About 126 km of the river flow through Bulgaria (2,770 km² catchment) and about 130 km through Greece (2,843 km² catchment). (it's almost equally shared by these countries).
  • Also according to
    Wikipedia:RIVERS#Rivers_with_multiple_names: If everything else is equal, then choose the name for the section of the river closest to the river's mouth, since generally that is where the river is widest.. Alexikoua (talk) 23:57, 13 March 2010 (UTC)[reply

Agree to move, according to WP:RiversMegistias (talk) 08:02, 14 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I agree that according to the guidelines by
Vjosë
where both of them completely ignored point two and three.

@Kostja: I never participated in Vjose discussion [[2]].Alexikoua (talk) 19:01, 14 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I'm sorry, I noticed an edit by you and thought it was connected with the dispute. In this case, I have no real objections to the move.
Of course, Mesta should remain the preferred name in articles which are Bulgarian-related, just like it is now with Nestos in Greek-related articles. Kostja (talk) 19:33, 14 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Sure, I agree on that.Alexikoua (talk) 22:33, 14 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • The river's section in Bulgaria is slightly longer than its section in Greece (126-104), but Google apparently has a slight preference for the Greek name. Britannica calls the river Nestos. IMO the case for moving is not very strong, but I'm OK with it. Markussep Talk 13:31, 17 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
There seems to be some discrepancy in the figures for the length of the Bulgarian and Greek parts of the river?
Along with the Google hit statistics for 'Mesta River' and 'Nestos River', the combined name forms using both 'Mesta' and 'Nestos' also seem to indicate a certain preference, namely the order in which the two names are placed: "mesta nestos river" (spellings Mesta-Nestos River, Mesta/Nestos River, Mesta (Nestos) River etc.) – 9,060 hits; "nestos mesta river" (spellings Nestos-Mesta River, Nestos/Mesta River, Nestos (Mesta) River etc.) – 99 hits.
On another point, the Bulgarian part of the river basin seems to be more populated, with towns like
Gotse Delchev, Dospat, Dobrinishte, Bansko, Razlog, Belitsa and Yakoruda, while on the Greek side there are Paranesti and Chrysoupoli, which (taking also into account the increasing popularity of Bansko as an international winter sports resort) may affect the Google hits figures in a not so distant future, too. Xanthi is about as far from the river as Bansko. Anyway, I have no strong preference for either form. Markussep Talk 14:33, 20 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, Xanthi is barely 10 km from Mesta/Nestos River yet not situated in its basin; the city river (Kosynthos) flows not into Mesta/Nestos but into Vistonis Lagoon. (By the way, how come that lake has no article in English Wiki?) Apcbg (talk) 17:41, 20 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
