Some years ago (maybe 6-8) in our backyard in central NH we (three of us) found a bird-wing sticking out of the ground. We pulled it out. A couple beetles, formidable creatures, appeared (these exact spotted critters shown here). They were clearly upset. We were so startled we left the bird where it was and it was reburied the next day. The evolutionary biologist among us knew exactly what they were and didn't express any particular surprise about seeing them. Critically endangered? I know this is an old post, but I thought it'd address it anyway. The endangered species itself can be easily misidentified with other similarly colored silphid beetles. If your biologist friend isn't an entomologist, I really doubt he knows the ins and outs of beetles. However, if you find more and think they're these guys, stick them in a vial of alcohol and find the closest university with an ento department, someone can probably take it from there. If they really are the American burying beetle and not a different carrion beetle, it's kind of a big deal to find them out of their known range. 129.93.5.129 (talk) 02:38, 10 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Followup on the old post, what should be the correct reaction to finding a potentially endangered beetle? Even if they are hard to identify, it would feel damaging to just kill beetles for potential research due to their endangered status.
