There seems to be an error in Count 2 of the 2014 results. Count 2 and Count 3 have exactly the same candidates, but with increased vote counts. That should not be possible in STV: Between two counts at least one candidate should either drop out or be elected. At first glance it would appear that there is a vote count for Mark Brotherston (NI Conservatives) missing in Count 2, but looking at the parties that gained most votes (UUP between count 1 and count 2, SDLP between count 2 and count 3) I get the feeling that it's actually Martina Anderson (Sinn Féin) who got elected not in the first but in the second count. - Andre Engels (talk) 05:47, 13 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

• This is better explained at pages from the Northern Ireland Elections site such as [1]. Where you see the same candidates in two consecutive counts, for one of the counts they're re-assigning votes from an eliminated candidate from the prior round, and in the other count they're reassigning excess votes from a candidate elected in the prior round. As to how they determine whether to reassign the eliminated candidate's vote before the excess votes of the elected candidate or the other way around, I wouldn't be able to explain that myself at this point. --Metropolitan90 (talk) 03:28, 18 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

It's not an error. Anderson's votes were still "live" in count 2, I've edited to make that clear.

As for choices, the decision on whether to transfer a surplus or eliminate a candidate depends on whether it can affect the order of surviving candidates. In this case, Anderson had a surplus of 3,218 votes. Even if all those votes went to the last placed candidate, Brotherston, he would still not be able to overtake the people above him, so count 2 involved eliminating him and transferring his votes.

For count 3, the total value of Anderson's surplus and the votes of the surviving bottom two, McKenzie and Brown, was greater than that of Reilly, so they transferred Anderson's surplus at this point.

For count 4, even if all McKenzie's votes went to Brown, he wouldn't be able to overtake Reilly, so both were eliminated together. Valenciano (talk) 11:02, 18 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
