Pending Update

On Sept. 30 2020, current incumbent can be updated to Jason A. Smith

But who is the parliamentarian?

I came to the article with a question that isn't answered in the article. What type of professional is the parliamentarian - what background? Politicians, lawyers, law clerks, staffers, bureaucrats? What pool are they selected from - House nonpartisan staff? SSSheridan (talk) 15:01, 6 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Edit: I see that my questions are somewhat answered in the Parliamentarian article, but 1) a sentence in this article would be fitting, and 2) I'm still not clear on what their professional background is - is "parliamentarian" a widespread profession that they train on and practice before being called upon by the House/Senate? Or are they clerks of some sort who step into the specialized role when needed? This may sound like an unnecessarily specific question, but to someone who knows nothing about the back end of Congress, I'm disoriented. SSSheridan (talk) 15:12, 6 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
