Murder

There's conflicting info regarding the three-person panel. http://www.pressconnects.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=2009912060384 says Professor Antoun was on it http://www.pressconnects.com/article/200912082015/NEWS01/912080360 says he wasn't. Sourcing encyclopedia articles from developing news stories continues to strike me as madness. Anyway, I also have a question regarding "E-mails from al-Zahiran to Watan, a weekly Arab American newspaper, regarding article in Israeli newspaper Maariv, October 22, 2009, from here" which currently appears in the external links. Is there any reliable source that those were in fact e-mails from al-Zahiran? What is the style guide with regard to using machine translations, which often render (as in this case) fairly incoherent text? Even if they definitely are his, and machine translations are acceptable, are they relevant?

I also hope care is taken that this article doesn't become the

Hi. Will take a look at the sources when I have a moment on the conflict. I seem to recall (without checking) that the NY Times, which generally has a good rep for fact checking, indicated he was on the panel. No doubt more will be written on the subject. As to the emails, which preceded the controversy, you can at least check the email address against his official school email address (they are the same). As far as machine translations, it is identified as such, so buyer beware. Seems relevant to me; as relevant as his other "state of mind" info; similar to Nidal's state of mind issues. I don't think this will be coatrack (which I think is an overused phrase in any event). As of now, the murder is a minority of the article. But keep in mind -- before his death, nobody even bothered to create an article for Antoun (though IMHO he warranted one). Now he has a good treatment of his career/accomplishments. Wiki just reflects what the RSs report. So, if there is more written on his murder over the next few years, yes, I would expect that part to grow. But Wiki doesn't make value judgments in doing so -- what the RSs cover is what WP mirrors (when things are going right). If it doesn't mirror the balance that exists in RSs, then undue weight is being given an issue. I don't think that's the case here. (BTW ... note that while "Richard Antoun" now gets 77,000 ghits, if you take out the words stabbed, killed, and death you get only 26,000 ghits, so it seems likely that the news of his death has already generated twice as much as his life did ... the reason that the murder is still a minority of the article is that that info is generally duplicative at this point, I would think.--Epeefleche (talk) 12:12, 12 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
