This reads like a 5th grader's homework assignment. "Under the watchful eye of manager Joe Torre"? Are you kidding? Also, the adjective "spotty," while acceptable for conversation, is not acceptable for formal writing. I know, I should edit it if I don't like it, but I just prefer to be a critic.

The phrase "An outstanding performer on both offense and defense,... " starting out the second paragraph in the lede really jumped out at me as fanboy material. As good as he was, and as good a guy, the first thing I'll always remember him for is being put in a headlock and pummeled by Nolan Ryan, a man 20 years older than him. I remember watching it and just falling out. And this comes from a guy who gained a lot of admiration for him for all the reasons mentioned in this excellent bio, and a Dodger fan who always felt good with Robin coming to the plate in clutch situations during that last year. -Wikitoddia 03:06, 17 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I went ahead and fixed what (to my understanding) was an inaccurate rendering of how the name "Ventura" is pronounced. Whoever provided the original pronunciation guide (1) had the first vowel in the IPA rendering as the reduced vowel ɨ and (2) gave a transcribed pronunciation of "vin-TURR-ə," with a short i as the first vowel. Neither of these seem right to me. There's enough secondary stress on that first syllable (I'd say) that ɨ is too schwa-like and indeterminate to render the vowel correctly. And it's pronounced as a short i only for speakers whose dialect includes a

; for most other speakers that vowel is pronounced (as you'd figure from the spelling) as a short e (IPA ɛ), giving a transcribed pronunciation of "ven-TURR-ə." Speakers with a pin-pen merger will see "ven-TURR-ə" and pronounce it "vin-TURR-ə" anyway. (I'm sure I've oversimplified some issues here, or worse; if you know any better, please set me straight.)
