Saul Rae's father's name

The article says he was "born Goodman Cohen in Palanga, Lithuania." However "Goodman Cohen" is obviously an anglicized version. Does anyone know what the (presumably Yiddish) original name was?

I would assume the first would be something like Gutman, and the last could be any of many different variants of Cohen. --Saforrest (talk) 13:37, 17 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

  • Goodman Cohen is the name used by Goodman's father Herman Cohen in his UK Naturalization and Declaration 24 Oct 1904, Glasgow, Scotland. It is probable that this was not even his birth name since they came from Lithuania. When Goodman registered for the Canadian Military for WWI he used the name William Goodie Cohen, though this name does not appear anywhere else.
  • I am more concerned about the charming but inaccurate story about how they started using the last name Rae. Goodman and Nellie immigrated with Goodman's parents and siblings in 1910 (so much for the family not approving). In the 1911 Canada Census they are all Cohen. In the 1916 Manitoba Census they are Cohen. In the 1921 they are all Cohen, and still living together including the three children Grace, Saul, and Jackie who is 1 mo. old. The name Rae does not appear until the children start singing in vaudeville, billed as the "Three Little Rae's of Sunshine". --User:REPeterson REPeterson (talk) 00:49, 4 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
