When is he born?

Lot of sites think 1 October 1944: http://www.google.com/search?num=100&q=Scott+McKenzie+arlington

I think that too. The 1981 edition of the Guinness Book of British Hit Singles has a photo of Buddy Holly pointing to the date October 1st 1957 on a calendar with the caption "Buddy Holly points out that it's Scott McKenzie's 13th birthday". I think part of the confusion stems from the fact that 1st October in America would be rendered 10/01 which might be mistaken for 10th Jan by a British person. MFlet1 12:19, 8 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Having said that.... his own website gives his date of birth as 10th Jan 1939 so we shold probably take that as authoritative. MFlet1 12:25, 8 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Techno version of the song

I have heard a techno version of the song where a sample of the original lyrics were used with a techno beat in some nightclubs. I have no idea who the recording artist is...4.230.54.82 08:31, 6 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

MacKenzie Phillips

Some mention should be made of the fact that John Phillips' daughter,

MacKenzie Phillips, was named after Scott McKenzie. (It's mentioned in her article, but it should be mentioned here as well.) (149.8.226.148 17:38, 29 November 2006 (UTC))[reply

Slurm McKenzie

Has the character Slurm McKenzie from Futurama something to do with Scott McKenzie?

if yes, it should be mentioned in the trivia section

No, the Futurama character "Slurms McKenzie" is based on the Budweiser advertising campaign using a dog named
Spuds McKenzie. This series of ads ran for something like a decade and has been widely parodied ever since. Davidgra (talk) 05:59, 8 September 2010 (UTC)[reply

San Francisco

The record was produced by Lou Adler and Papa John Phillips, written by Phillips, and sung by Scott McKenzie. Scott was born Philip Blondheim in 1939 on 10 January. Scott got interested in singing and playing guitar in the mid fifties. Singing always meant more to him than playing any instrument, although he entertained the fantasy of becoming a jazz guitarist for a while. His real love at the time was jazz. He used to spend hours singing along at the top of his voice to jazz vocal albums. In the mid fifties Scott and John Phillips were both singing, but in separate vocal groups. They first met at one of John's legendary parties in his apartment on Ramsey Alley in Alexandria, Virginia. John sat in a corner on the floor, singing and playing one of his songs on guitar. Scott told him he liked to sing and play guitar too. John said "Well, sit down and sing this part." Scott did as he was told, and so began a long musical friendship. Scott appears in good health - his body aches and creaks like it does for most people of his age (67). He maintains an interesting sense of humor and seems happy. Surprisingly, Scott McKenzie dislikes the sound of his own voice. This is perhaps another of the reasons that he didn't continue a recording career. Scott has given permission for this web page. http://www.scottmckenzie.info/story.html Davjohn (talk) 07:28, 21 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Question

Did Scott McKenzie have to serve in the army? Did he have to go to Vietnam? If yes: when? If not: why? Sciencia58 (talk) 08:48, 26 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I grew up in a forest house inside a US Army military training area in southern Germany. Once I was sitting in the garden with my guitar, it was about 1968 or 1969. An American soldier came to the garden fence. I went to him. He asked if he could play my guitar. I opened the garden door and asked him in. He was a good guitarist, he sang country songs and folk songs, also If you go to San Francisco. He had a beautiful voice. Other children came along and we listened to his songs for an hour. We had already learned some English at school. I asked him "What is your name?" He answered: "I'm Scott, Scott McKenzie". We had never heard the name before. After a while he said goodbye and disappeared into the training area. In later years, when I heard that name, I always had to think of the nice young man who had sung so well. He looked the same. Today I looked in Wikipedia for the date of birth of the American singer Scott McKenzie. It's not a rare name, but the soldier could have been him, he could have been about 29 years old. In our city Erlangen there were a few young artists, musicians, who helped some American soldiers to hide from the army so they didn't have to go to Vietnam. There were American soldiers who had a case pending who had applied to be exempted from military service for a special reason. Perhaps Scott McKenzie was allowed to return to the USA. Sciencia58 (talk) 11:46, 27 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

By the way, I am 100 % sure it was him, because I recognized him by his look on a YouTube of 1967. There is a gap in his biography between 1968 and 1970 [1]. I can understand very well that as a pacifist he avoided letting information about this time get out, after all he was not in Germany voluntarily and certainly did not wear a soldier's uniform voluntarily. I suppose it was only for a short time and he was allowed to go back to America very soon because now he was a famous musician. He looked exactly the same like here, only with short hair and in soldier's clothing [2]. In the German Wikipedia there is an article about the former Nato-Training area, were he came into our garden, because all he wanted was to play music and sing: [3]. This is now a nature reserve.
