Sestra River is the Russian version for Siestarjoki, later renamed to Rajajoki (Border River). However, original Finnish name is Siestarjoki and historically the river forms the border between Finland (Karelia) and Inkereland (Ingermanland).

The Swedes called it Systerbäck.

Siestarjoki village belonged to Kivennapa county in Grand Duchy of Finland to 1864. That year Tsar Aleksandr II suggested to Finnish Diet the exchange the Siestarjoki village to Russian territory with compensation to coastal area in Petsamo to the Arctic Sea between Norwegian border and Jaakopinjoki (Jacob´s River) near Stolbova Bay. The reason for this was a foundation of Siestarjoki Fifle Factory which Tsar wanted to be inside Imperial Russian territory, not inside the Grand Duchy of Finland.

This Imperial Ukaze was given in Helsinki on February 14, 1864.

The original text is preserved in Helsinki and many word to word describitons of text are published in Finnish literature in Finnish and Swedish languages.
