Merge from
Strongman (strength athlete)

The

Strongman (strength athlete) stub appears to add nothing but a list of notable strongmen to the history of strength competitions given here. Further, it's very strange to say that strength athletics are "more generally known as strongman competitions" but then link to something completely different for strongman competitions. I suggest merging that article into this one, and making "Strongman (strength athlete)" and "Strongman Competitions" redirect here. Rvcx (talk) 15:53, 28 March 2010 (UTC)[reply

It also looks like the

Strongman (circus) only contains a paragraph of text, and the names of three notable circus strongmen. It would make a lot more sense to put that content here. Rvcx (talk) 16:34, 28 March 2010 (UTC)[reply

So I think we have had some confusion on this point between editors.
Strength athlete to Strongman which seams appropriate. I think the article Strength athletics should be renamed to "Strongman (competitions)" and Strongman should be renamed "Strongman (history)" but I'm not doing name changes without consensus. StarHOG (Talk) 14:54, 25 May 2023 (UTC)[reply

Merger proposal

I propose merging the content of Strongman into Strength athletics. Both pages cover both the 19th century/circus use of the term "strongman", and the contemporary athletics usage. As neither page contains significant citations for the 19th century usage, it's not clear that any of this content is notable/verifiable enough to merit a separate page. • Oppose - There is some crossover, but there is sufficient difference for them to remain.Halbared (talk) 20:20, 10 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose - The strongman can be used in both athletic sports and the circus. @Halbared: is right about this claim. --Rtkat3 (talk) 15:47, 23 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose - In my opinion, Strength athletics should contain more elements from 19th century/circus strongman and Highland games and kept separated. A better title would be 'Traditional Strength athletics'. Strongman mainly contains info from 1977 onwards and is a better representation of modern day Strongman competitions. I think it would be better to transfer the Angus MacAskill and Great Gama pictures and early history details from Strongman to Strength athletics; and Major titles and title holders section of Strength athletics to Strongman.

Sorting the Strongman vs. Strength athletics debate

Hello @Rvcx @Skookum1 @Andy Dingley @StarHOG @Joyous! @Halbared @Rtkat3, since we guys are the ones who were interested on this, I believe it gives us the right to mutually agree on the final decision and sort it for good. Nir007H (talk) 04:40, 2 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Okay, I vote for a merge. In fact, looking at all the above suggestions, I vote we do them all. StarHOG (Talk) 13:13, 4 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Correct usage

I've suggested that

so that these related ideas can be better linked together.

The lead of this article suggests a significantly different scope from the main body of the article. Perhaps

I'd say that strength athletics (aka strongman competitions) are a parallel to olympic weightlifting, powerlifting, and bodybuilding—all four are distinct sports. Competitors in all four are likely to incorporate
strength athlete, as are competitors at certain positions in other sports. I'm not sure "Strength sports" is a term used widely enough to be considered notable. It's not our job to invent a new taxonomy for articles. Sometimes there are umbrella terms, sometimes there aren't. Rvcx (talk) 20:28, 26 April 2010 (UTC)[reply

That's a fair point. I don't know that much about such competitions, but it's interesting to see the relationships between them. You are probably right about "Strength sports" not being widely used enough. Still, I'll create a navigation template (

Some clarification

From the incipit: Strength athletics, more generally known as strongman competitions [...].

Is "strength athletics" the same of "strongman competitions"?
