While the original addition arguably was a little POV, the fact remains that the incident involving O'Driscoll received wide attention and will be associated with Umaga. If I don't hear any good argument against it, I think the paragraph should go back in with one or two changes: "illegal spear tackle" should be changed to to "controversial tackle" with a factual description of what happened and the fact that the citing commisioner found that Umaga didn't have a case to answer should be included.

If points of view are being noted, it would be worth noting that many in New Zealand felt it was a gambit by media advisor Alistair Campbell to deflect attention from a poor performance by the Lions.

handbag incident at new zealand

Someone with proficient English (not me) should add the handbag incident in. If you weren't informed yet, last Sunday, Tana Umaga (who was drunk) used a women's handbag as a weapon against his Hurricanes team mate Chris Masoe because he had tried to attack him. Because of the whackings, the cellphone inside was damaged. The handbag and the broken cellphone is currently being auctioned on TradeMe, at a price of $45,000 at the time of this writing.

Lions Tour 05

i think more reference should be made to this event and a link to a video of the incident should also be made available. Also what happened should stated correctly not by someone who would try to dressd down what happened and why it happened —Preceding unsigned comment added by Twinytwo (talkcontribs) 18:01, 19 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Incorrect nonsense. It's an historical footnote which has received more attention than it deserved. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Antipodean (talkcontribs) 07:54, 24 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Seriously? Kiwi I guess? I don't think you guys have any idea what damage the incident did to the reputation of NZ rugby. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 114.77.3.108 (talk) 02:12, 15 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The Handbag Incident may have been important in 2006, but hardly deserves its own article now. AIRcorn (talk) 10:43, 23 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

O'Driscoll incident

Tana Umaga is mainly known for one single thing, his brutal foul on O'Driscoll, and it's very strange that it's not mentioned in the introduction. Most neutral sports commentators have commented on it as one of the ugliest things ever carried out in any sport. Perhaps more important for Wikipedia is the fact that it changed the instructions given to referees. To hide it in the middle of a long article without even mentioning it in the introduction is absurd.Jeppiz (talk) 19:37, 15 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

What spear tackle?

The incident with Brian O'Driscoll was neither a spear, which is when a player is driven downwards while upside down, nor even a tackle. It was a ruck cleanout where the player was lifted and not returned to ground safely. Dembones7 (talk) 07:53, 16 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
