Is this article supposed to be about the Street called "the pleasance", or about the venue? It's a bizarre mixture of the two at the moment. Tpacw (talk) 19:27, 14 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

[The] Pleasance

Every map and road sign I've ever seen omits the "the". – Smyth\talk 22:08, 28 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

A Pleasance is a pleasant place to walk out in from a large house, abbey etc. The Pleasance of Edinburgh back in the day was just such a place, although maybe not so pleasant anymore! Nobody in Edinburgh refers to it as plain "Pleasance", one always says if going that way that one is going "up the Pleasance" or to "the Pleasance". Brendandh (talk) 00:21, 29 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

That is true, but nevertheless the proper name of the road is simply Pleasance. Compare, for example, this informal set of directions with this postal address. – Smyth\talk 08:49, 29 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Although compare this:[1]. It states that the Street is named after the city of Piacenza. Brendandh (talk) 15:57, 30 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Don't push too much on this one. See Calton Hill talkpage for a lively discussion on the missing 'the'. Scots shove in 'the' wherever they can, and not just in the names of streets and districts, e.g. Robert the Bruce, but it seems that Wikipedia can't cope with this Scottish 'abnormality' of speech. The name of this article appears to breach the Wiki rule
Wikipedia:Naming conventions (definite and indefinite articles at beginning of name). The official street name and address is Pleasance. I agree it is commonplace to say "the Pleasance" but it is also commonplace to say "the Royal Mile", "the High Street", "the Lawnmarket", the "Grassmarket" and "the Cowgate". Don't blame Wikipedia when it is Edinburgh Council that decides the name. It would be more appropriate to petition the Council to stick "The" in front of these names. In contrast, "The Mound" is the proper name. Everyone says "the United States" but the Wikipedia article is entitled "United States".77.99.105.125 (talk) 03:51, 13 February 2013 (UTC)[reply

Something missing in the lead paragraph?

The first para describe TP as a street blah blah blah. The rest of the article is about the student's union, and then some sort of succession of theatre companies. If the commonplace meaning of TP can indeed be the union and the theatre companies then the lead should speak about this. If not, then the article should be about the road and not (at length) about the union nor the theatre companies. I know nothing of this place TP, so over to someone who does. thanks. --Tagishsimon (talk) 23:26, 17 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Moved to The Pleasance (street)

I have moved this article from

The Pleasance (theatre) was a red link until I turned it into a redirect. I propose making The Pleasance an article about the Edinburgh venue and creating a separate article about the venue operator/London theatre. Does anyone have any thoughts on this?
