The Tilly Smith article mentions the Thomas Gray Special Award. I found mention of this at

• MSSC Annual Court 2007 and [1] "The Thomas Gray Silver Medal is awarded annually for an exemplary act of seamanship ..."
• TROPHIES AND AWARDS 2009/10 "Thomas Gray Memorial Trophy (awarded to the runner-up for the Canada Trophy) – Walton-on-the-Naze Unit." (this is from their newsletter)
• The Marine Society & Sea Cadets, 30 October 2009 "The Thomas Gray Silver Medal is awarded annually for deeds of professional merit" (this is from a newsletter)
• The Marine Society & Sea Cadets Financial Statements for the year ended 31 March 2007 "Thomas Gray Memorial Trust" (lists funding amount)
